GREATER ST LOUIS BRITTANY CLUB

DECEMBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

YEAR TO DATE EVENTS

As the last newsletter was in March, there is the whole fall to report. We did not have a Picnic this summer; we couldn’t get enough who would attend on the days we could hold it, so it was cancelled. We can try again this summer.

We did put on several events this fall which were successful, so we will start by reporting on them:

  • Fall Hunt Test

This was headed up by Gina Nelson as Event Secretary, who had qualified her dog for the Junior Hunter title in 2008. She was assisted by Randy Meyers as Chairman, and we had a good turnout of members at the trial, to compete, help plant birds, and give other assistance. Dave Hanson was there to help, along with Larry Stewart, Tony Indelicato, Roger Knox, and several others. Barb Shepard judged on Sunday. Gina handled all the paperwork along with Randy.

Saturday Qualifiers included(Brittanys only listed):

 Daren’s Trigger Happy Hunter-D Mueller

 Mistaken Creek’s Shady Lady-Larry Stewart

 Nelson’s White Hot Grace-Gina Nelson

 Red’s Rubi Jewel-Jeff Struckhoff

 Robertson’s Hunter Two-J Robertson

 Robertson’s Sassy-J Robertson

 Rusti Star-K Shackelford

Six Master Hunter candidates went to the line; none passed. Judges were Cecily Barker and Rodney Albin.

On Sunday, with Paul Tenting and Barb Shepard in the judges saddles, the SAME BRITTANYS QUALIFIED AGAIN! This time, two of Mike Kleinsorge’s GSP’s qualified out of a field of 6 for Master. The Whetstone grounds were is fine shape

for this event; perhaps a bit long due to the wet summer. The weather was good enough, if not perfect.

  • Quail Classic

The club co-sponsored this event with the Central Arkansas Brittany Club, but Pam Baird and Al Gorrow did all the hard work. Phil Corlew was there for two days but had to leave for a meeting in Chicago. This trial ran very smoothly with the use of the small, self propelled dog wagon Pam and Al obtained up north, Al planting the birds, and Pam cooking for the multitude at dinner in the evening. The breakfasts and lunches were, as usual, cooked by Joan Covey. The Sportsmen’s grounds were long and wooly but birds were plentiful; the Association had pre-released about 1500 in late September and we provided another large number, delivered by Sen. Chuck Purgason in case the earlier rains had thinned out the pre-released coveys. There was lots of bird work. For the winners, you can check out the AKC website, but FC/ AFC THE FAR SIDE’S KID AMEE, owned by Burton and Sharon Wice, was in the placements with a third. As AMEE is coming 12, this is phenomenal.

  • Fall Horseback Trial

This followed the Quail Classic at Grovespring. Considerable confusion was caused when one of the pro’s had to scratch a bunch of his dogs and leave due to a

death in the family. However, the trial was run, financial disaster was avoided, and two of our member’s dogs distinguished themselves. Ww’s I love Lucy, owned by Burton and Sharon Wice, was second in the Amateur Gun Dog and their Million Dollar Molly, a true daughter of Aux Arc’s Mark, won the Open Gun Dog.

  • The Roy Quick Award

This award is named after one of the co-founders of our club, and goes to the winner of the Amateur All Age in the fall field trial. This year’s winner was

FC ODYSSEY’S TEQUILA AZUL, owned by Neil Mace. It couldn’t go to a nicer guy. An addition will be made to the plaque in the clubhouse at Grovespring. Last year’s winner was Burton and Sharon Wice’s ageless AMEE.

NATIONAL GUN DOG CHAMPIONSHIP

SNIKSOH SALLY, owned by Phil and Louise Corlew and handled by Bob Burchett, was Runner Up in the National Gun Dog Championship held at Ionia Michigan Oct 19-23. Sally has a number of other notable accomplishments this fall (see below).

NATIONAL AMATEUR ALL AGE CHAMPIONSHIP

THE FAR SIDE’S KID AMEE ran in the Amateur (and for that matter the Open) All Age Championship. Burton got her posted in the Amateur which at Amee’s age is a remarkable accomplishment

OTHER PLACEMENTS

David and Stacy Hodges have two puppy placements this fall on their pup LCH’S EDWARD LONGSHANKS placed 4th at Neosho Valley (12s) and 2nd at Midwest (12s).

SNIKSOH SALLY (See above) placed 2nd at Nebraska (50 s), 3rd at Missouri (39s), 1st at Neosho Valley (35 s), 1st at Midwest (31 s), and 2nd in the National Open Gun Dog Championship (53 s). She currently stands 2nd in the Tritronics standings and should have finished high in the Magnums Masked Man standings based on this fall’s results.

SHALE VALLEY’S MYLA TECH has been doing a great job in the walking trials, starting with 3rd in Heart of Illinois OWGD (21s), Iowa AWGD 1st (16s), Greater Milwaukee 1st in both OGD (14s) and AGD(9s). This includes spring placements not previously reported.

There are a number of placements which have not been reported at this writing-or if they were, I have lost them. I have seen somewhere that Dave Capstick’s youngster ACE OF SPADE has some placements which should be reported. AMEE I believe has some placements this fall other than those reported above. There are some Hunt Test legs and perhaps a title or two and it is for the good of the breed that these be recognized, along with their owners.

DOG OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Please put your placements and point totals together and get them to me by February! Last year it was October before these came out. It is a good way to publicize your dog for its accomplishments and won’t do you any harm either! Remember the categories are Juvenile, Horseback Gun Dog, Walking Gun Dog, and All Age. Also the ad in American Brittany recognizes titles earned during the year, and this includes Hunt Test titles! Closing date for submitting the data is the end of February. But the sooner the better!

If you need the requirements email me at and I will email back.

DUES

There is supposedly a new way to pay dues. Unfortunately, there seems no new policy to clear checks within 3 months so your secretary knows what members are paid up. Until

this system proves or disproves itself, I ask that you continue to send your dues to me and I will send AKC their share. That way I know who our members are. We had one member who wasn’t getting his magazine-for months!- and we found it was a mistake at the national level, where someone had mis-transcribed his address. The magazine may be one of the best parts of the national club, and makes it worth the dues just to find out what Brittanys are doing and what the breed is about. I might add that I have not gotten a list of members shown paid up by ABC since summer. I have raised that issue several times in the last few years, but things have NOT improved.

Meanwhile, if you are not getting your magazine and you are paid up, or you are not getting notices, etc, CONTACT ME. Or, if someone else becomes secretary CONTACT THEM.

I should add that the ABC Executive Secretary is NOT part of the problem-this is not part of her job and she does wonders working with legislative issues in the various states, where HSUS and other ogres are attempting to destroy all purebred dogs-and all pet ownership-and working to serve the needs of the local clubs in other ways, such as shows, field trials, etc. She has had to live with it too, along with the errors and problems of the member clubs. She has been most helpful to this club and this secretary. Thanks, Mary Jo!

PUPPIES

I am still getting a few inquiries for puppies. Let me know if you have any, or any on the way. I get calls and emails from time to time.

OFFICERS

The January meeting is for election of officers. No nominations have been announced at this writing.

MEETING

Field Trials will take much of the discussion at the January meeting, as well as financial reports for the year. These should be short enough not to put anyone to sleep. Summary: We’re ok.

Respectfully submitted,

Phil Corlew, Secretary
