HOLOCAUST RESEARCH PROJECT

RESOURCES

STEP1: CHOOSE A TOPIC RELATED TO THE HOLOCAUST:A LIST OF TOPICS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN CLASS. YOU MAY WANT TO DO A PRELIMINARY SEARCH OFTHESE TOPICS ONLINE IN ORDER TO NARROW YOUR RESEARCH TO ONE TOPIC AND ONE THESIS/RESEARCH QUESTION. BE SURE TO USE THE C.R.A.A.P. TEST WHEN DETERMINING IF A WEBSITE IS A VALID SOURCE.

STEP 2: DETERMINE YOUR THESIS OR YOUR RESEARCH QUESTION (GUIDING QUESTION): THE THESIS OR RESEARCH QUESTION WILL GUIDE YOUR RESEARCH BY USING EVIDENCE THAT WILL ANSWER YOUR RESEARCH QUESTION OR SUPPORT YOUR THESIS.

EXAMPLE: WHO WAS DR. MENGELE? (THIS IS VERY GENERAL BUT GIVES YOU MORE OPTIONS)

EXAMPLE: WHAT WAS THE KINDERTRANSPORT?

EXAMPLE: HOW DID THE ANNE FRANK FAMILY STAY HIDDEN FOR OVER TWO YEARS? (THIS IS MORE SPECIFIC WHICH GIVES YOU MORE DIRECTION ANSWERING THE QUESTION)

STEP 4: TAKE NOTES AND CREATE SOURCE CARDS: FIND CREDIBLE SOURCES FOR YOUR INFORMATION (IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY). WHILE READING INFORMATION, TAKE NOTES ON THE DIFFERENT MAIN IDEAS (PARAGRAPHS) THAT WILL BE THE FOCUS OF YOUR RESEARCH. IF YOU QUOTE THE SOURCE YOU MUST USE QUOTATIONS. YOU MAY ALSO PARAPHRASE THE INFROMATION (IN YOUR OWN WORDS). YOU MAY ALSO USE JUST WORDS OR PHRASES FOR YOUR NOTES. REMEMBER, YOU MUST CREATE A SOURCE CARD FOR ANY ARTICLE (SOURCE) THAT YOU USE INFORMATION FROM.

STEP 5: CREATE A WORKS CITED PAGE: TAKE ALL YOUR SOURCE CARDS AND CREATE A WORKS CITED PAGE. THE WORKS CITED PAGES GIVES THE SOURCES WHERE YOU GOT YOUR INFORMATION. THE EASIEST WAY TO DO THIS IS TO USE EASYBIB.COM. INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE THIS SITE ARE IN THIS PACKET.

STEP 6: ORAGNIZE YOUR NOTES: ONCE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR NOTES (CARDS) YOU WILL NEED TO ORGANIZE THE NOTE CARDS BY TOPIC. THIS WILL HELP YOU ORGANIZE YOUR PAPER INTO PARAGRAPHS.

STEP 7: WRITE YOUR ROUGH DRAFT: ONCE YOU HAVE THE NOTES COMPLETED AND ORGANIZED YOU CAN START TO WRITE YOUR RESEARCH PAPER. USE YOUR NOTE CARDS TO WRITE THE ACTUAL PAPER. YOU WILL BE USING THE MLA FORMAT (IN THIS PACKET) TO WRITE YOUR PAPER. YOU MAY ALSO PEER EDIT OR HAVE A PARENT EDIT YOUR PAPER.

STEP 8: REVISE AND EDIT: AS YOU ARE WRITING YOU WILL BE REVISING (CHANGING THE CONTENT, MOVING INFORMATION, ETC.). DO A FINAL READ THROUGH (OUTLOUD) AND MAKE THE FINAL CHANGES TO YOUR PAPER. YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU SPELL CHECK AND GRAMMAR CHECK THE PAPER.

STEP 9: PUBLISH YOUR PAPER: PRINT OFF A FINAL COPY FOR THE TEACHER. TURN IN THE FINAL COPY!

  • SOURCE CARDS: WHEN YOU GET INFORMATION FROM A WEBSITE, BOOK, MAGAZINE, VIDEO, ETC. YOU HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT TO THE AUTHOR AND CITE YOUR SOURCE. TO DO THIS YOU WILL NEED TO CREATE A SOURCE CARD. THE EXAMPLES BELOW ARE WHAT INFORMATION YOU NEED ON YOUR SOURCE CARD AS WELL AS THE FORMAT YOU USE. SOME WEBSITE ARTICLES WILL HAVE A BUTTON TITLED “CITE” THAT YOU CAN USE TO GET THE INFORMATION NEEDED.

CREATING A WORKS CITED PAGE CHECKLIST

◦Go to easybib.com.

◦Make sure that you are on the correct tab at the top that indicates which type of source you used.

◦Copy and paste URL of website you used into the Cite Source tab

◦You will notice that it tells you what information is missing. You may need to go back to the website and supply Easy Bib with this information.

◦Click continue.

◦Click on display URL – Make sure that the yes bubble is filled in.

◦Go back to the original website and add any information you can find that is missing. Not all information is available for every website. The less information it has for your works cited page, the less credible it is.

◦Click on Create Citation.

◦Continue this process for all of the websites you pulled evidence from for your paper during your research process.

◦After you have entered all of your sites into Easy Bib click on the boxes for the citations you want to include in your Works Cited/Bibliography page.
