HOBHOLE OUTFALL LITTER BINS

Photograph on front cover:-

Part of the ongoing initiative from Fishtoft Parish Council, phase 2 commenced with the installation of a litter bin and dog waste bin on the area atHobhole pumping station.

Phase 1 commenced last year with the formation of a team of volunteer litter pickers and a team photograph was published in the Target newspaper. During a recent litter pick collection involving Toot Lane and Rochford Tower Lane, 14 bags of rubbish were collected.

This particular location is where rainwater collected from arable farmland to the north is pumped from the Hobhole Drain into the tidal River Witham, known locally as the Haven. It is a popular area for walkers just east of the Pilgrim Fathers memorial site and is linked from there by a footpath.

Many species of bird can be observed in this area, particularly waders and large flocks of Brent Geese during the winter months which favour the marshy margins on the Frampton side of the river and are rich in marine vegetation.

It is from this point that a new entrance to the river was formed through the Scalp to deep water at Clay Hole. This required an Act of Parliament which was obtained in 1880 specifically to obtain improvements to the Haven navigation. As a direct consequence of this the construction of Boston Dock went ahead and was opened 4 years later in 1884.

On behalf of Fishtoft Parish Council, I thankWitham Fourth Internal Drainage Board for all of their assistance and help in getting this initiative off the ground and in the long term to make this a much cleaner and litter free area for everyone to enjoy.
