A4.3.1 / I / The ZU1 segment (UK Additional Data) includes NHS Number Tracing Status (ZU1:27). This segment is only included in the ADT messages relating to episodes of care whereas NHS Number Tracing Status logically forms part of the patient demographic record i.e. PID/PD1 / Use PID:32 (Identity Reliability Code) to store NHS Number Tracing Status. This is a repeating field so existing usage is unaffected. The field can be used to store the status codes as defined in the NHS Data Manual as there is no conflict with any existing codes. Alternatively, each status code could be pre-fixed with ‘NSTS’ to reduce the potential for future conflict. Thus, the codes will be:
NSTS01 - Number traced
NSTS02 - Number present but not traced
NSTS03 - Number not present - trace required
NSTS04 - Trace attempted - no match or multiple match found
NSTS05 - Trace needs to be resolved - NNN or patient detail conflict
NSTS06 - Trace in progress
NSTS07 - Number not present - trace not required
NSTS08 - Trace postponed - baby under 6 weeks old
Note that a person may only have a single NHS Number Tracing Status therefore although PID:32 is allowed to repeat, a specific business rule will have to be implemented to ensure that only one status code. This rule could be based around the usage of the NSTS prefix as long as it is reserved exclusively for NSTS status codes.

Date / Action (HL7 UK Recommended Action / Published for Consultation / Adopted as Pre-Standard)
12/6/02 / Discussed at Working Group meeting. Agreed that PID:32 (Identity Reliability Code) would be extended to allow a value in the form ‘NSTSn’ where n is the actual value of the tracing status. A rule will be included that restricts the NHS Number Tracing Status to a single value within the repeating field.
28/10/02 / Amendment included in document circulated to HL7 UK membership prior to 1st Committee Ballot for HL72UK vA.2.
19/11/02 / Amendment included in ballot pack for 1st Membership Ballot for HL&2UK vA.2
