P5 Phonics skills

Consolidation Practice

Exercises 1 -6

Aims and background:

Ø  This set of exercises aims at consolidating students’ knowledge of phonics skills.

Ø  Priority items are those identified as difficult areas in the phonics pre-test (Jan 2011).

Ø  Alternatively, the teacher may play the role of speaker and read aloud the words in each exercise to the whole class.

Ø  After all pairs have checked the answers, the teachers will lead the class to read aloud the words to consolidate the correct pronunciation of the words.

Learning outcomes:

Ø  Each exercise can be conducted as pair work between Student A and Student B.

·  Student A- Students A will be able to read aloud some unfamiliar words by using their phonics skills (Encoding skills)

·  Student B- Students B will be able to listen to some unfamiliar words and choose the correct forms by using their phonics skills (Decoding skills)

Variation:

Ø  For the more able students, the teacher may allow the students to play the role of Speaker, allow them to number the words in the order they like, and /or allow them to add one more new word to challenge their partner.

Ø  For the less able students, the teacher may allow them to play the role of Listener first and later Speaker when they are more skilful with the game. The teacher may allow two less able students to work together as Listener and work with a Speaker. The two listeners can discuss before putting down an answer together in the table.

Activity

Bingo

Learning outcomes:

Students are able to listen for the words in their Bingo sheet. They need to have good decoding skills.

1.  This is the full revision list.

2.  It can be cut into four parts: 1, 2, 3, 4 (by colours).

3.  Teacher will prepare 27 copies of mixed colours (e.g. 5 blue, 5 yellow, 6 pink, and 6 green).

4.  She then distributes them to the students randomly.

5.  Teacher prints out a copy of the full list and cuts them into small word cards.

6.  She will draw the word cards from a paper bag.

7.  If a student can cross out any 6 words read aloud by the teacher, he/she should shout ‘Bingo’ and can win a candy/coupon.

8.  Teacher will continue to read more word cards so that more students can have a chance to win.

9.  Teacher may play the game for the second round and each student will get a new Bingo sheet (of different colour).

Variation

Teacher lets some students draw the word cards and read aloud to the other students.
