Tennis Unit

Day1-

1.Introduction-

  1. History, growth and development.
  2. Modern game, 4 major tournaments, top players in the game, etc.
  3. USTA- Who? What? Where? Why?
  4. Popularity/participation at every level.
  5. Equipment growth and development.

2.Equipment usage/care.

3.Warm-ups-

  1. Ups, Downs, Dribbling, Flip/Flops, Edgies, Combinations, etc.
  2. Wall Ups (forehand/backhand), Wall “one hops”
  3. Racquet catches, other “tricks”.
  4. Running laps- Balance the ball on the racquet, Downs, Combos, etc.
  5. Racquet Knock-off- Balance the ball on the racquet and knock other balls off with the free hand.

4.Picking the ball up (non-nerd tennis)

5.Single Person Wall Alley Rally (hit your own spot with wall “ups” and floor)

6.Alley-Rally- Partner games, challenge games (winner’s court). Hit the partner’s spot.

7.Ground Strokes- Dry run (no ball; ready position to Forehand/backhand). Forehand, backhand, against the wall (self evaluations/quick checks).

Day 2-

  1. Quick warm-ups, challenges, running, races, etc.
  2. Wall Work- ground strokes, short continuous volleys.
  3. Serves to partner across the floor…hit the partner’s spot.
  4. 3 Person Baseball- partner 1 tosses the ball; partner 2 returns (hits) the ball with a forehand/backhand to partner 3 (the outfielder). Points for each successful catch.
  5. 3 Person Activities/Games- a. 3 person relay- run to the opposite lane line…3 consecutive hits against the wall and return, b. 3 person wall hits rotating with two racquets only, c. 3 person net serves- 1 person on each sideline w/ a racquet, the third person in the middle. Serve over the person in the middle (the human net) and take their place…back and forth.
  6. Winners Court- Singles tennis over the low nets…one point, winner stays, loser moves to the next game.

Day 3-

  1. Quick warm-ups.
  2. Wall ground strokes practice.
  3. Tennis “Knockout”- singles…successful hit/return, move to the end of the line (still in the game), a miss/mistake and you’re out… move down a game. Continuous play, whoever has the ball serves.
  4. Mixed Doubles games/tournament- 3 minute games…everyone rotates.

Day 4- Mini tournament play…games to 5…winner’s stay…2 wins max…court courtesy.
