Directions

Read through each of the sections and study the tissues. Use the “Back” button to make sure that you are following the outline as indicated on this page. Answer the questions on this page ON A SEPARATE PIECE OF PAPER. USE COMPLETE SENTENCES IN YOUR RESPONSE.

Introduction

  1. What is the function of epithelial tissue?

Epithelial Tissues

  1. What are the characteristics of epithelial tissues?
  2. Describe the intercellular junctions present in epithelial tissues.
  3. Why is the lack of intercellular space an advantage in the function of epithelia?
  4. How does the number of layers contribute to the function of the tissue?
  5. What are apical and basal surfaces?
  6. How are nutrients brought to and wastes eliminated from epithelia?
  7. What gives epithelium its ability to repair itself?

Classifying and Naming Epithelia

  1. How are epithelial tissues named?
  2. Describe the shapes that epithelial cells may take.
  3. How do we name stratified epithelia (which layer of cells do we look at)?
  4. What are cilia and microvilli?
  5. What are the exceptions to the naming of epithelium? Describe these two exceptions.

Simple Epithelia

  1. Sketch a diagram of simple squamous epithelia.
  2. Name some example of locations we may find simple squamous epithelium.
  3. Sketch a diagram of simple cubiodal epithelia.
  4. Where are common locations of simple cubiodal epithelia?
  5. Sketch a diagram of simple columnar epithelia.
  6. Where do we commonly find this tissue?
  7. Why do pseudostratified columnar epithelial cells appear to be stratified?
  8. What do goblet cells do?

Stratified Epithelia

  1. Why are some epithelial tissues stratified? What function does stratification serve?
  2. Keratinized epithelial cells are unique to what structure? What consequence does this have for the cells?
  3. How does keratinized stratified squamous epithelium differ from the unkeratinized mucus type? Describe the locations of the unkeratinized type.
  4. What is transitional epithelium? Where is it located?
  1. Sketch a diagram of stretched and unstretched transitional epithelium.
  2. Is there a limit to the number of strata columnar and cubiodal epithelia can have? Why do you think this is?
  3. EXCELLENT pictures of stratified columnar and cubiodal…be sure to look at these!!

Glands

  1. Describe the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands.
  2. How do the secretions of these glands differ?
  3. What is a duct?
  4. Describe the secretion process from a merocrine gland.
  5. Describe the secretion process from a apocrine gland.
  6. Describe the secretion process from a holocrine gland.
  7. How do the products of endocrine glands make it to their “target organs” where they exert their effects?
