HOMEWORK #4

Provide horizon nomenclature and interpretive characteristics (runoff, saturated hydraulic conductivity for the most limiting horizon, available water holding capacity, and wetness class) for the following two pedons.

Pedon 1

Soil Series:Pedon: S92NC-117-002

Location: Alleghany County, North Carolina; 5 miles northeast of Laurel Springs; 1 mile south of Prathers Creek Church; 300 yards east of County Road 1149.

Hillslope position:BackslopeElevation (m):Slope: 25% N

Parent materials: Residuum from felsic gneiss

Physiography: Blue Ridge MountainsLand use: unimproved forest

Described by: Shaw and HajekDate: 1/11/92

Base saturation of all horizons is <50%.

--0 to 28 cm; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loam; moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; few fine mica flakes; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

--28 to 35 cm; brown (10YR 4/3) loam; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few mica flakes; few medium gneiss and quartz fragments; moderately acid; gradual smooth boundary.

--35 to 56 cm; brown (7.5YR 4/4) loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine mica flakes; few medium fragments of quartz and partly weathered rock; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

--56 to 72 cm; brown (7.5YR 4/4) loam; very weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; friable; common medium fragments of quartz and partly weathered rock; few fine mica flakes; slightly acid; gradual wavy boundary.

--72 to 108 cm; mottled brown (10YR 4/3) and grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sandy loam; gneiss saprolite; massive; friable; slightly acid; gradual boundary.

--108+ cm; dark colored hard gneiss bedrock.

Physiography:Loess capped till plainLand use: cropland

Described by: Sodek and Pothier Date: 11/89

Base saturation of all horizons is >50%.

--0 to 15 cm; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; friable; few very fine pores; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

--15 to 29 cm; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam; moderate fine granular structure; friable; few very fine pores; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

--29 to 63 cm; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) silt loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common very fine pores; neutral; gradual smooth boundary.
