Hillel Events of 2008-2009
Friday Shabbat Dinner – The first Friday of every month we have a have a Shabbat dinner and service. The average attendance is 110 people, and our expenditure for the event ranges from $300-$500 depending on what type of dinner it is (Dairy or Meat). The meals are Kosher, as are all events that Hillel puts on. In the 2008-2009 year we have put on 8 Services/Dinners
Mini-Shabbat Dinner – The 2nd Friday of every month we put on a Mini-Shabbat Dinner and Service. The service consists of the blessings over the wine and bread. The Dinner includes Bagels, Lox, fixins, and some form of dessert. The average expenditure for this type of event is $100-$200 depending on the current price of fish, and which desserts we choose to serve. In the 2008-2009 Year we will have put on approximately 6 of these events.
Rosh Hashanah – We gave rides to both Temple Ner Shalom (conservative) and Congregation Beth David (reform), for services. A Rosh Hashanah Dinner was also provided on the night of Rosh Hashanah. A Kosher Chicken Dinner was served. This event cost approximately $500.
Yom Kippur - We gave rides to both Temple Ner Shalom (conservative) and Congregation Beth David (reform), for services. A breaking of the fast event was put on that had bagels with all the fixins, as well as plenty of desserts and Hot Chocolate. This event cost approximately $300.
FYSH BBQs – During the Fall Quarter there were three FYSH BBQ/Social Events that had been put on to help integrate freshman and others to Hillel. These events each cost between $100 and $200 based on what food was being served and our estimated attendance.
Sukkot – Hillel held a Hookah in the Sukkah event that simply had snacks, and drinks as well as the obvious hookah smoking under the sukkah. A lulov and etrog were also obtained for the event. The event cost approximately $200.
Sushi Night – As a fun Social Event Hillel hosted a Sushi night where everyone could get together and learn to make sushi, as well as eat it. This event cost approximately $300.
Kosher Iron Chief – Our 2nd Annual Iron Chief Event was held during winter quarter. In this event people were grouped into 5 different teams and were given a budget of $40 to spend of ingredients and then given 2 hours to make 2 dishes from the secret ingredient (apples). The dishes were then all brought back to one place and we all got to try them out. A simple vote was taken to determine the winning team, and the winning team got free Hillel shirts. This event cost approximately $500.
Hillel Talent Show – During one of our Shabbat Dinners during winter quarter we put on the first annual Talent show. Members composed acts and preformed them on stage for all to see.
Israel Speaker – In conjunction with Cal Poly Israel Alliance, and Stand with US, we got Ido Ahroni to come and speak to our school. This Event Cost us $XXX
Passover – On the first Night of Passover he held a Passover Seder, complete with service, and plenty of Food which we were able to get catered from Los Angeles. Approximately 185 People attended this event. This Event Cost us $XXX.
Yom Ha’Shoa – For Holocaust Remembrance, we had a display out on one of the main lawns of our campus. There were 6 Posts (symbolic of the 6 Million) with various pieces of information about people and the happenings of the holocaust. The posts were surrounding A large Pile of over 200 Pairs of shoes, with a poem that depicted a metaphor of the shoes being related to the tragedy of the lives lost during the Holocaust. During the day, people came and read names of those who had been lost.
Yom Ha’Atz Maut – For Israel’s 61st Birthday we had a booth out on one of the main lawns of our campus and had a moon bounce, handed out pieces of cake, and gave away plenty of materials on various aspects of Israel. This event was held in conjunction with Cal Poly Israel Alliance.
Lag B’Omer – FUTURE – This event will be a Bon Fire Variation of one of our Mini-Shabbat Dinners. The event will take place at Temple Ner Shallom, and we will celebrate and have kosher s’mores.
Karaoke Night – FUTURE – This event will have the members getting together to have fun and sing some of their favorite songs.
