High School guide 2017-2018: Introduction

1

Note to Students and Parents

The purpose of the Student Program guide is to assist students and parents in planning a high school course of study tailored to individual student needs, interests and aspirations. After an introductory section on graduation requirements, grades, academic placement, and student classification, the program of studies provides a brief description of the prerequisites and content of the high school courses offered by the Jacksboro Independent School District. These descriptions should be consulted in selecting courses for next year. Students and parents with questions regarding courses and the implications of selecting them are encouraged to consult with the counselors. Information in this guide is subject to change at any time due to updates in local, state and federal policies.

Availability of courses listed in the program guide depends on student requests and availability of staff.

JACKSBORO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKS TO PROVIDE EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY WITHOUT REGARD FOR RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, NATIONAL ORIGIN, SEX OR DISABILITY.

Semester System

The high school operates on a semester system. Each school year is divided into two semesters, and each semester is divided into three grading periods. Most courses are two semesters in length.

Attendance

Students must be in attendance a minimum of 90 percent of the days after enrollment in the course. See the ISD Handbook for more information.

Grade Classification and requirements

JISD requires that all students complete 26 credits of an approved graduation plan to receive a high school diploma. Of these, only two may be a local credit course. In addition, students must perform satisfactorily on all sections of the state-mandated End of Course exams before receiving a diploma.

Grade level advancement for students in grades 9-12 shall be determined by the number of earned course credits according to the classification chart below.

Class Standing -- Credits Required for

JHS Grade Point System

Grade weights shall be assigned to grades earned by high school students for purposes of class ranking in accordance with the following scale:

--Advanced Placement/ Dual Credit 1.10

*AP/DC included in the GPA when the class is taught on the JHS campus by a vetted instructor

--Pre-Advanced Placement 1.05

--On-Level classes 1.00

Honor Graduate requirements

  • Complete all graduation requirements in regards to academic and non-academic courses
  • Attain at least an overall 90 average in all unmodified subjects taken at Jacksboro High School or any other accredited school. All grades (passing or failing) of academic courses will be included in the GPA
  • The average for the second-semester of the senior year will be obtained by averaging the fourth and fifth six-week periods
  • All other averages for honor students will be taken from the semester average expect when two students have identical averages. If this should occur, then the six-week grades from the first semester of the senior year will be averaged and percentages will be carried forward until the highest and second highest averages are determined.

The two highest academic honors given at Jacksboro High School are that of valedictorian and salutatorian of the graduating class. The honor of valedictorian will be given to the senior students making the highest numerical average, and the honor of salutatorian will be given to the senior student making the second highest numerical average. These averages follow the Honor Graduate calculations.

Correspondence courses, examinations of acceleration or credit-by-exam tests, and non- academic subjects will not count toward honors.

Students who transfer from other schools with letter grades only shall have their grades averaged by Jacksboro Independent School District standards:

A+=98A=95A-=92

B+=88 B=85 B-=82

C+=78 C=75 C-=72

D=70 F=60

Only those students who complete their last two years in Jacksboro High School are eligible for valedictorian and salutatorian. In the case where a student does not qualify for top academic honors because of the two-year attendance rule, yet has the highest average, his/her transcript will show the student as ranking number one. The same ruling holds true for all top students not meeting the attendance rule.

Advanced Placement program

Courses offered through the College Board’s Advancement Program enable students to pursue college level coursework while still in high school. JHS supports the principle that all students who are willing to accept the challenge and rigorous coursework provided through a college level curriculum deserve an opportunity to participate in AP courses. All AP and PAP classes require extra time on the part of students for class preparation, outside reading and/or labs, and completion of assignments than is normally required of students in on-level classes. It is the expectation that students who take AP classes will take AP exams. If a student does not take the AP exam, they will not earn the additional weight for their GPA from that class.
