High School Course Syllabus Outline for EOC Courses
I. Description of Course
In English I students encounter the different genres of literature and types of writing. Students work with the elements of literature using short stories, novels, plays, and poetry. ELA I gives and overview of the different types of writing with an emphasis on expository and literary writing. Grammar is taught in conjunction with assignments and not in isolation. Major selections are chosen from:
The Odyssey
Romeo and Juliet
To Kill a Mockingbird
Animal Farm
A Tale of Two Cities
Ten Little Indians
II. Objectives:
In an effort to help students connect literature with life, each major unit in their textbook Literature, Language, and Literacy provides the opportunity for students to relate the concepts to their life and the world around them. These questions are referred to as the big question and include but are not limited to:
Is conflict necessary?
Can truth change?
Do heroes have responsibilities?
Do our differences define us?
How does communication change us?
The big question is the umbrella concept for the unit. Each selection has additional questions that help students connect the ideas generated from the specific reading to the overall big question. Resources available to students are:|
Readers Notebook
Audio available for selected readings
Online Textbook (
Personal Laptops
Teacher Websites
Free internet access on campus
LMS (Learning Management System)
III. Grading Procedures
Major grades account for 60% of six-week average; minor grades account for 40% of six-week average. Parents and students have access to grades using GradeSpeed. Instructions for GradeSpeed set-up are on kleinisd.net. Students are offered a second chance to make up failing or missing assignments according to teacher discretion within the following guidelines:
1. Test corrections or rewrites available for major grade assignments
2. Students must contact the teacher within a week to set up an appointment for tutorials and/or test corrections
IV. Grade Repair
Students will have the opportunity to receive instruction to recover six weeks grades. When a student enrolls in the Grade Recovery Class, the students will receive quality instruction. The curriculum will recapture any skills they are lacking so that they are prepared to receive credit and also be prepared for the EOC/TAKS in April or May. This intervention plan may include students attending after school Grade Recovery or Grade Recovery during the day. The highest grade a student can earn is 75. This grade will replace the lower grade. Students enrolled in Pre-AP courses may enroll in grade repair and receive Pre-AP credit for up to 1 six weeks per semester. Students enrolled in AP courses may enroll in grade repair and receive AP credit for up to 1 six weeks per semester. AP courses will have additional writing requirements in order to recover the grade and GPA point value.
