ALGEBRA B (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0319)

Course Description: This course is the second of a two-year program designed to give a student the full experience of Algebra I without the fast pace of a single-year course. Algebra B is equivalent to the second semester of Algebra I. The student must successfully complete both Algebra A and Algebra B or Algebra I before enrolling in the next succeeding course.

ALGEBRA II (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0338)

Course Description: This course builds upon and extends the concepts, skills and understanding learned in Algebra I. The course will also introduce more advanced topics that will serve as a foundation for Pre-AP Calculus, Trigonometry and College Algebra. Suggested Calculator is TI-83 Plus or TI-84.

COMMUNICATIONS I (Remediation or Enrichment) (1st session only)—BSHS (HS0502)

Course Description: This semester course is designed to help students improve their communication skills through various types of activities. Activities include introductions to self-awareness, opportunities to prepare, present and evaluate speeches, exercises in articulation, group decision making activities, and analytical thinking. Fulfills the ½ unit of Speech requirement for graduation.

ENGLISH II (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0112)

Course Description: Students will review usage rules essential to good writing and will learn to apply these in their own writing. They will write essays of analysis, essays responding to fiction and nonfiction texts, and essays based on researched information. Students will read world literature selections of poetry, fiction, drama, and nonfiction and will work on vocabulary improvement.

ENGLISH III (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0120)

Course Description: Students will further develop their skills in composition, research, analysis, problem solving, and critical thinking. This course involves a review of the structure of English and usage skills in preparation for the ACT. Students will develop their skills in drawing inferences in their reading and in analysis. Students will discuss major themes in American literature and will write research based essays.

ENGLISH IV (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0138)

Course Description: Students will develop the reading and writing skills needed to read college-level texts and to succeed in postsecondary writing courses. This course will focus on reading nonfiction texts and on the following types of writing: summaries, college admissions essays, textual analysis, research-based synthesis, and persuasive essays. Students will review skills needed for success on the ACT and COMPASS tests and will read several major works in British literature.

FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS & CHEMISTRY (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0428)

Course Description: This course provides a survey of chemistry and physics while providing the student a solid science foundation. Students will perform experiments, make predictions, collect data, perform analysis, and formulate conclusions. In the Physics section, topics include force and motion, work, power and energy, electricity and magnetism. The Chemistry component includes such topics as atomic structure, chemical reactions, types of matter, compounds, elements, periodic table, and acids.

GEOMETRY (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0334)

Course Description: This course provides a variety of topics using shapes with problems, proofs, and basic constructions so that the student has the opportunity to analyze and practice independent thinking. This expanded knowledge will allow students to enhance their Algebra skills by using 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional geometric figures and appropriate formulas.

INTRO TO THEATER (Enrichment) (2nd Session Only)—BSHS (HS0522)

Course Description: This is a survey course for students who wish to explore the fundamental concepts of theater. Units covered include basic acting skills, theater history and dramatic structure. This may fulfill the ½ unit of Fine Arts credit or the Speech requirement for graduation.

P.E. (Enrichment) (1stsession only)—BSHS(HS1248)

Course Description: In this dress out class students will participate in various high and low impact aerobic exercises designed to tone, strengthen, and sculpt muscles to improve overall body composition and cardiovascular fitness. Emphasis will be on exercises that improve flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and the cardiovascular system. Weekly lectures will include information on practicing and maintaining good nutrition, emotional wellness, and healthy lifestyles.

PERSONAL FINANCE (Enrichment or Remediation)—BSHS (HS1503)

Course Description: This course explores practical financial skills necessary for young adults to survive in the world after high school. They will study banking, budgeting, investing, credit card use and abuse, insurance, and home and automobile purchases. They will learn job hunting skills by creating resumes and cover letters as well as participating in a mock interview. This course is required for graduation by the State of Missouri as well as the Blue Springs School District. Membership and participation in FBLA, an association for business students, will be encouraged.

Course Description: An electronic curriculum for credit recovery which requires prior counselor approval.

UNITED STATES HISTORY (Remediation)—BSHS (HS0205)

Course Description: This is a survey of United States history from Manifest Destiny to contemporary events with an emphasis on post-Reconstruction events. Its goals are to instill an appreciation of the US democracy, and understanding of the US constitutional, political, economic, and social developments, and an increased knowledge of US geography. Students will further develop skills in critical thinking, research, and writing skills. Primary and secondary documents will be used to research and report findings.

WORLD HISTORY(Remediation)—BSHS (HS0236)

Course Description: This is a survey of world history from ancient Greece and Rome to modern day conflicts. The focus will be post-1450 and events in world history. Major trends, cultural diversity, institutions, and ideas will be integrated throughout the course of study. Students will continue using primary and secondary historical documents to help interpret the past and better understand contemporary issues. Students will continue to develop their social studies skills of research, writing, and critical thinking.
