Introduction

Microsoft offers a method of intentionally saving and restoring digital certificates. This may be used for personal backups. It may also be used to transfer a digital certificate from PC to PC due to replacement of hard disc drives or system upgrades where the digital certificate integrity is a concern or the complete PC is replaced.

Note this is a Microsoft supported operation. It is not the role of Hewlett-Packard Company staff to support this operation. This document is supplied solely as an aid to the BPIA process. It is not a definitive document for understanding the Import/Export of digital certificates in the Microsoft environment. HP will not entertain questions regarding this process. The user of this document is encouraged to investigate this process on his/her own and ask any questions of their IT Support Group.

Data in this document are based upon a PC running Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0. The author has used a similar, but not identical, process under Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, SP2.
