Heston West Big Local Community Chest

Fund Registration and Application Form

The Community Chest Fund will support activities to improve the lives of local residents living in the Heston West Big Local area.

Those activities can be small scale or more ambitious but the maximum grant we can give is £500. We can only accept ideas from individuals who live in the Heston West area and Community Groups but we’ll want to know why you want to have your activity and why you think others will want to take part. We may ask you to come to an interview to talk about your application. It’s normally a condition of accepting a grant that you offer up to 2 hours of support or mentoring to a future applicant.

What days and times could you most easily attend a meeting?

What are you going to do? (e.g. what are the activities you will put on with and for residents). Is this a new or existing activity?

Where will your project/activities take place?

Who is your activity/project for? (For example, give ages of children or details of specific communities targeted e.g. this project is for Somali men over 60 or for families with children under 10)

When will the activity take place and for how long? (E.g. we want to run a 12 week course starting in September)

Have you run this or a similar activity before? Could you give a few details about your experience?

Why do you want to do this activity? (This is a question about what makes you excited about your idea, what you think participants will get out of it and any thoughts you have on longer term impacts of the activity)

Are you aware of any similar activities in the Big local area? If yes, what is different about this?

How will you make sure that the people your activity is for will find out about it?

Will you need to pay someone to run your activity (for example an instructor)? If yes, please give details of who, their skills/qualifications and how much they will be paid. (Please note we cannot fund applications made by individuals who expect to pay themselves)

Please give a budget for your activity. We would like to see separate costs for items such as hire of hall; transport; instructor costs; costs of materials or equipment. We have put an example in the box below. You can attach your budget or write it on the back of this form.

Do you expect participants to pay towards the costs? If yes, please say how much you think they will pay and how many people do you expect to be paying?

Do you already have or are you looking for funding for this project from anywhere else? If so, please give details. This can include your own fundraising (e.g. cake sales). If your project will cost more than £500, you must answer this question. Please say whether you already have these funds.

Is there anything else you think it would be helpful for us to know to help us make a decision about this application?

Is there any training or support which would be helpful to you in making this activity happen?

We are keen to help others in the community learn from your experience. We may ask successful applicants to this fund to offer 2 hours of mentoring or support to a future applicant. Is there anything which might make it difficult for you to do this?

FAQ

1.  What is the Community Chest?

The Community Chest is a small grants fund. It is part of the Big Local programme.

2.  Who is it for?

The Community Chest is for people living in the Heston West Big Local area. (This includes: Brabazon Estate, Redwood Estate & Harlech Gardens)

3.  Who can apply to it?

Local residents/students living in Heston West Big Local area and Community Groups.

4.  How much can I apply for?

The upper limit to the fund is £500.

5.  What will it pay for?

Anything which local people want to do which will improve the quality of life in the Big local area. So, it might pay for a group of residents to take their children to the seaside or to pay the hall hire and instructor fees for someone to teach languages to a group children. Or to pay the hire costs of a studio for a group of older people to record a CD, or the instructor costs for a dog obedience class for the residents of one housing block. Or for a community tea dance or a tutor for a homework club for people about to take their GCSEs. Or a couple of weekends’ coaching for a dads’ football team. You get the general idea. It can pay for activities, items of equipment or hire of facilities.

6.  How do we get it?

a)  Make sure there are at least two of you who want to organise an activity etc.

b)  Get a registration form from the Big local website www.hestonwest.org or at the Brabazon Community Centre.

c)  Work out how much you think your idea will cost and who you want to involve in doing it

d)  Take your completed form to the office or email it to Taz

7.  What then?

The panel will talk to you about your idea. They may make some suggestions. You will hear their decision quite soon after your meeting.

8.  When will I get the money?

Unless you are a constituted organisation with a bank account, you won’t get the money. Instead, the Big local will pay for the things they have agreed to fund direct to the suppliers. So, if they have agreed to pay hall hire, they will pay the community hall directly. If they have agreed to buy paint and paper for an art activity, they will order it for you.

9.  Do I have to do anything else?

We will ask you to take photos of your activity/event and send them to us. We will put the photos in a display so that other people can see what is happening in their neighbourhood and perhaps be inspired to organise something themselves.

10. What if I have an idea but am worried about how to take it forward?

If you need any help with deciding how to organise your event, working out the costs, knowing how to tell people about it or filling in our registration form, just ask Taz for help.

11. Actually, I’d like to help make decisions about who gets the money

Brilliant! Let Taz know and we will have a chat to you about how to get involved with the assessment panel.
