Heritage Doll Project

Due Wednesday, November 16th

Exciting news! We are beginning a fun filled, fact finding unit of study in third grade. The students are learning that pilgrims are people who travel to another country seeking religious freedom. Most people in the United States have ancestors who came from other countries. Some ancestors may have moved here long ago and others more recently. Native American ancestors were here before any of the others.

For our project, each student will make a “heritage doll” with parental/family help. This is an open-ended project and your doll should represent your heritage or country of research. You may choose to use the doll template that was provided or you may create your own doll from toilet paper rolls, corn husks or clothespins, etc. Remember to dress your Pilgrim doll according to your ancestry. This is NOT a project where you need to go and buy special materials. Be creative & use the things around your home! I have attached examples of past projects for you to refer to if needed.

As you work with your child on this project, take the opportunity to share your family’s heritage. The doll may represent an actual family member in your ancestry, or it may just be a representation of the country your child is researching.

We understand that there could be circumstances where we may not know our family heritage, and that’s ok! Dig in, do some research and choose an interesting location where immigrants came to the United States.

This project is due back to school on Wednesday, November 16th. The children will present their dolls and explain why they chose to dress their pilgrim the way they did and they will share their wonderful ancestry discoveries.

We hope this project will give the children a better understanding of immigration and the sacrifices that people make in order to have a better life for themselves and their families. Have fun and don’t hesitate to let us know of any questions/concerns.

Sincerely,

The Third Grade Teachers
