Third Grade Arithmetic Facts Practice Sheets

Notes for the Teacher:

·  Facts of the Week! Central to the idea behind these sheets is that every week there are five facts on the board which the teacher works on with the whole class in a variety of ways (e.g., using movement, rhythmical work, games, etc). These facts of the week then appear multiple times on the sheets for the current week, and are then reviewed systematically for the next several weeks.

·  The hope is that by having the students spend just five minutes (or less) per day on a math fact sheet, that they will effortlessly learn their math facts by heart.

·  Daily practice. There are 20 weeks (100 days) of sheets in this set. Each sheet has 30 problems.

·  Completion. Since these sheets are designed to be an integral part of learning the math facts, it is important that each sheet of the entire set be completed, otherwise certain facts won’t get adequate exposure.

·  The emphasis on these sheets is with the more difficult addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts. Subtraction facts are perhaps given more weight because it is my experience that subtraction is often the most difficult for students, and slows there calculation down the most in later years. Division has been left out of these sheets with the belief that it comes later quite easily as long as the multiplication facts have been adequately learned.

·  This should be easy! The introduction and learning of the facts should be done with the teacher. These sheets simply give practice to what is already familiar. If these sheets become too difficult and tedious, then it is likely that the classroom work being done in preparation for these sheets is either insufficient or not effective enough.

·  How to use these sheets.

·  This should be fun and easy for the students. If successful, it will build their confidence.

·  It is important to make sure that these sheets don’t become torture for the students.

·  Try to de-emphasize the importance of speed. Help the students to realize that improvement is what is important.

·  It may be best to fit these sheets into the morning routine in such a way that there is no time pressure. Students who finish earlier simply move on to another activity, while others may take more time on the math fact sheet.

·  Copying the sheet. The idea here is that each day the teacher copies by hand the 30 problems onto a fresh sheet of paper, and hands copies of that to the students.

·  What comes next? The next set of sheets is titled Third & Fourth Grade Arithmetic Facts Review Sheets, and is intended to thoroughly and systematically review the math facts that were introduced in this initial set. The Review Sheets also consist of 30 problems per day for 20 weeks (100 days).

·  Are flashcards necessary? By doing a math fact sheet every day, most students will not need to do math fact flashcards. However, it is important for any student who is not strong with their math facts by the middle of fourth grade (at the latest!) to work on flashcards. In most situations, the parents should be able to ensure that the students do their needed flashcard work at home.

·  The goal is that every student will have learned all of the math facts by heart by the end of fourth grade. It will, of course, need to be reviewed in fifth grade. Trying to memorize math facts after fourth grade is rarely successful.
