Here is how you can register for classes for the upcoming semester.

PAY 50% TUITION DEPOSIT

You cannot register for classes until you have made a tuition payment to Navitas at UMass Boston prior to registration. If you have not yet made the payment, please do so immediately.

TAKE MATH (ALEKS) WRITING PLACEMENT EXAMS

All UPP students must takes ALEKS (Math placement exam) AND the Online Writing Assessment.

You must take the exams BEFORE August 16, or you will not be able to select courses on your own.

If you delay and do not complete your exams by the deadline, Navitas will automatically enroll you in courses and you will not be able to make the decision on your own.

Without your exam scores, you will not have the chance to take Math or English courses in your first semester, which you need to stay on track. In order to ensure you are registered for the appropriate courses, it is vital that we have your English and Math exam scores.

WHAT IF I DO NOT DO WELL ON THE ALEKS EXAM? CAN I TAKE IT AGAIN?

Yes. You can retake ALEKS after 48 hours. However, please note that you can only retake ALEKS 3 times in one calendar year. If you retake ALEKS, you will be required to attend a Preparation & Learning module for three hours between your first and second assessment. If you need to retake ALEKS a third time, you will be required to attend a five-hour Preparation & Learning module between the second and third assessment.

CAN I TAKE THE ONLINE WRITING ASSESSMENT AGAIN?

No. You can only take the Online Writing Assessment once.

HOW TO TAKE THE EXAMS

  1. Sign in to WISER, which is your UMass Boston Student Account.
  2. Logging into WISER for the first time? Click here (
  3. Once you are logged in, choose “My Academics” from the left-hand column.
  4. Disable all pop-up blockers on your internet browser. The exams will appear in a separate window.
  5. Choose ALEKS Math Place, Prep, Learn Writing Assessment from the bottom left-hand column.
  6. Email when you have completed ALEKS with your full name and UMB ID number. Include your ALEKS score.
  7. Check your scores:

COURSE / MINIMUM ALEKS SCORE / DETAILS
MATH 115 / 44 / College Algebra. Completion of this course with a B or better meets the prerequisite for Statistics or Pre-Calculus.
MATH 129 or 130 / 59 / Pre-Calculus for Management & Social Science Students (129) or Pre-Calculus for Science & Math Students (130)
MATH 134 / 66 / Managerial Calculus (College of Management majors ONLY)
MATH 140 / 74 / Calculus I (College of Science & Math majors ONLY)

*If your ALEKS assessment score is 39 or below, you will be required to take a non-credit Math Prep class in order to help you develop the skills you need to place into Math 115.

REGISTER FOR CLASSES BY AUGUST 30

REGISTRATION BEGINS AUGUST 16 at 10:00am ESTand will end on Tuesday, August 30 at 6:00PM EST! IF YOU DON’T REGISTER FOR CLASSES BEFORE August 30, NAVITAS WILL CHOOSE YOUR CLASSES FOR YOU, AND COURSE AVAILIBILITY WILL BE LIMITED.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES

  1. Sign in to the Navitas Student Portal(
  2. Your USERNAME is your 6-digit Navitas ID number (found on your Letter of Offer)
  3. Your PASSWORD is your Date of Birth in the following format: dMonthyyyy!
    Ex: January 5, 1995 = 5January1995!
  4. Note: You will not be able to log into the Portal until your payment has been received.
  5. Select the Enrolment tab

  1. Review and click “I agree to the terms and conditions”
  2. Choose your classes:
  3. Choose 4 classes (3 credit classes + UNI 101)
  4. During registration, you should only finalize enrollment once your Study Load reaches 100%.
  5. Refer to the Student Handbook when selecting courses. Pay attention to pre-requisites!
  6. Click on a class to see the time it is offered. To select a class time that is available, click “next” and then click “Enrol.” After each class is chosen, your Study Load will increase as your funds decrease. UPPstudents should take 100% Study Load
  7. Once you reach your correct study load, click “Finalise Enrolment”. YOU MUST CLICK “FINALISE ENROLMENT” IN ORDER TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES!
  8. Once you’ve finalized your enrollment, click the TIMETABLE tab to view your schedule. PLEASE REFER TO THIS PAGE FREQUENTLY AS YOUR SCHEDULE IS LIKELY GOING TO CHANGE. DO NOT RELY ON A SCREENSHOT OR PRINT OUT OF YOUR SCHEDULE!

Don’t worry about making a mistake when selecting classes. We will review your schedule to make sure that you have chosen the proper courses. However, if you don’t register for your classes prior to Orientation, we will be forced to choose your classes for you based on what is available at the time of Orientation. Keep in mind that most classes fill up very quickly, so it is in your best interest to do this prior to your arrival in Boston.

IMPORTANT TO YOUR REGISTRATION!

  • Some classes may not be available to you due to pre-requisites, class capacities, or your program of study.
  • Course descriptions are available in the Student Handbook
  • Changes may be made to your schedule before the start of the semester due to:
  • Changes in classroom space
  • Occupancy limitations
  • Changes in timetable
  • Instructor scheduling
  • Enrollment in the wrong class
  • Math Placement requirements or prerequisites
