Hi Families,

Here is a list of the different types of math story problems to practice at home with your child. I encourage you to make adaptations or changes to the story problems, while keeping the same format, when you find it necessary. You can also change the context and numbers of the stories to be more relevant to your child’s interests or experiences. I wanted to give you some examples of the different types of problems that we are working on in class to help guide you in practice at home. I hope this will be resourceful!

Story Problem Examples

Combine- result unknown

There are 13 fish in the fish tank. 8 more fish get dropped into the tank. How many fish are in the tank now?

I have 16 pieces of candy in my bag. I put SOME more pieces in my bag, now I have 24 pieces. How many pieces of candy did I put in my bag?

There are 17 snowmen in the yard. 9 snowmen melted. How many snowmen are left standing in the yard?

Multiplication

There are 6 bags of rocks. Each bag has 5 rocks in it. How many rocks are there all together?

Division

I have 24 rocks. There are 6 children in the class. Each child needs to receive the same number of rocks. How many rocks will each child receive?

Compare

Tasha has 15 flowers. Dominique has 9 flowers. How many more flowers does Tasha have than Dominique?

Student A ran 7 miles and Student B ran 11 miles. How many more miles did Student B run than Student A?
