Appreciation Marketing
based on the book written by Tommy Wyatt and Curtis Lewsey

Here are a few notes from the call:

  • All other things being equal, people will do business with you because they like you. How likeable are you?
  • There’s a time and place for business marketing. Keep your personal touch PERSONAL. Leave your logo off of birthday and holiday cards. Do not include a business card unless it is a business message. NEVER mix the two.
  • Don’t make it about YOU, make it about THEM.
  • It’s not how many business cards you collect. It’s the quality of the relationships you build with the human beings you’ve met.
  • Be remembered as a person who expresses gratitude. Set yourself apart by always saying thank you with a card. A verbal, email, or text message thank you is not the same. NOT saying thank you is even worse.

Interesting marketing statistics:

  • Cost of retaining an existing customer is 1/10th the cost of acquiring a new one
  • 5% in customer retention = 25-85% improvement in profitability
  • 68% of customer defection is because of perceived indifference

Thank You Champions:

  • Mary Kay Ash (Mary Kay Cosmetics empire)
  • Tom Hopkins – built a 99% referral Real Estate business in 3 years
  • Joe Girard—“The greatest salesman in the world” – averaged selling 6 cars a day for 15 years

How likeable are you? 7 Deadly Creatures:

  1. Sucker
  2. Whiner
  3. Vulture
  4. Mr. Halitosis
  5. Puker
  6. Topper
  7. Narcissus

Create an Appreciation Marketing Strategy (AMS):

  • Set aside specific time to send out gratitude every day. Put it in your planner and make the commitment to spend 10 minutes a day expressing gratitude. One expression of gratitude per day would be 365 expressions of gratitude in one year!
  • We take time for the urgent, but we need to make time for the important.
  • Practice saying Thank You: Send unexpected cards, make heartfelt phone calls, give small gifts, be a giver

Attributes of an ideal AMS:

  • Easy to set up and maintain
  • Minimal time investment
  • Inexpensive
  • Tangible – not email, e-cards or text messages
  • Personalized specifically for the recipient
  • Provides reminders for important dates – birthdays, anniversaries
  • Tax deductible
  • Add your own personal video message
  • Ability to include gift cards or tangible gifts

Simple disciplines repeated daily will guide you to your destiny.

  • What would happen if you smoked a pack of cigarettes a day?
  • What if you eat a half-gallon of ice cream each day?
  • What if you invested money every day?
  • What if you appreciated the people in your life every day?

If you answer yes to these questions, we can make it easy and affordable for you to DO IT!

  • Do you have 5-10 clients, friends or family members that you are grateful for?
  • Are they worth a $1 card? Do they deserve to know how much they mean to you?

What is it costing you (in lost business) to NOT send out appreciation on a regular basis?
