Adaptogen
Herbs that normalize and restore body functions and increase the body's nonspecific resistance to stress: ginseng, licorice, nettle, astragulus.
Alterative
They are also known as blood purifiers. Herbs that gradually restore health and vitality to the body: burdock, yellowdock, red clover, nettle, oregon grape, alfalfa, gota kola, marshmallow, ginseng,dong quai.
Analgesic/Anodyne
Herbs that relieves pain: meadowsweet, white oak bark, skullcap, valerian, catnip, passion flower, chamomile.
Antacid
Herbs that neutralize excess acid in the stomach and intestinal tract: dandelion, fennel, slippery elm, catnip, mullein, meadowsweet.
Anthelmintic
Herbs that kills expels worms or parasites: garlic, onion, wormwood, rue, thyme, clove.
Antibiotic
Herbs that inhibit the growth of, or destroy bacteria, viruses or amoebas: echinacea, goldenseal, myrrh, chaparral, juniper berries, thyme, garlic.
Anticatarrhal
Herbs that eliminate or counteract the formation of mucus: cayenne, ginger, sage, cinnamon, anise, gota kola, mullein, comfrey, wild cherry bark.
Anti-inflammatory
Herbs that reduce inflammation: st. john's wort, calendula, arnica, licorice, chamomile, wild yam.
Antilithic
Herbs that prevent, dissolve, discharge urinary and biliary stones and gravel:
dandelion, cleavers, corn silk, uva ursi.
For gallbladder: oregon grape, chaparral.
Antiphlogistic
Herbs that reduce localized inflammations, itching and swelling:calendula.
Antipyretic

Antiseptic
Herbs that can be applied to the skin to prevent the growth of bacteria: goldenseal, calendula, chaparral, myrrh and the oils of tea tree, oregano, thyme, garlic, lavender, pine, juniper, sage.
Antispasmodic
Herbs that prevent or relax muscle spasms: lobelia, dong quai, black and blue cohosh, skullcap, valerian, kava kava, raspberry leaves, rue.
Aphrodisiac
Herbs used to improve sexual potency and power: damiana, saw palmetto, ginseng, sarsaparilla, kava kava, burdock.
Aromatic
Herbs that stimulate the gastro-intestinal system, and improves the taste of medicines and foods: lavender, peppermint, angelica, cayenne, cinnamon, dill, citrus peel.
Astringent
Herbs causing constriction of tissues: raspberry leaf, witch hazel, white oak bark, yellow dock, uva ursi, calendula, myrrh, horsetail, blackberry root.
Bitter
Herbs that stimulate gastric function: hops, mugwort, dandelion, oregon grape.
Carminative
Herbs that promote digestion, expel gas, and relieve gripping: anise, fennel, chamomile, peppermint, caraway, ginger.
Cholagogue
Herbs taken to promote the flow and discharge of bile: goldenseal, oregon grape, dandelion, wild yam.
Demulcent
Herbs that protect and soothe the digestive tract, reduce inflammation and irritation in
the respiratory and urinary systems: corn silk, comfrey, marshmallow, slippery elm.
Diaphoretic
Herbs that promote perspiration: elder, yarrow, osha, ginger.
Diuretic
Herbs that increase the flow of urine: dandelion, couch grass, uva ursi, plantain, horsetail.
Emetic
Induces vomiting and causes the stomach to empty: lobelia, elecampagne, blessed thistle,ipecac.
Emmenagogue
Herbs that promote menstruation: pennyroyal, myrrh, black cohosh, juniper berries,rue, wild ginger.
Emollients
Herbs that sooth and soften the skin: marshmallow, comfrey root, slippery elm, chickweed, plantain.
Expectorant
Herbs that help expel mucus from the lungs and throat: horehound, elecampagne, ma huang.
-Stimulating expectorant
Herbs that stimulate the nerves and muscles of the respiratory system to manifest a cough:elecampagne.
-Relaxing expectorant
Herbs that reduce tension in lung tissue, often easing tightness, allowing natural coughing and flow of mucus to occur: coltsfoot, licorice, hyssop.
-Amphoteric expectorant
Herbs that stimulate or relax the respiratory systems, using the body's choice which is necessary: lobelia, mullein, horehound, elder, garlic.
Febrifuge
Herbs that assist the body in reducing fevers: catnip, elder, peppermint.
Galactogogue
Herbs that increase the secretion of milk: anise, blessed thistle, fennel, vervain.
Hemostatic
Herbs that are internal astringents that arrest internal hemorrhaging: cayenne, yarrow, cranesbill, mullein, goldenseal, horsetail, uva ursi, yellow dock, witch hazel, shepherd's purse,blackberry.
Hepatic
Herbs that strengthen and tone the liver: oregon grape, agrimony, dandelion, goldenseal, wild yam.
Hypnotic
Herbs that have a powerful relaxant and sedative action, and help induce sleep: hops, valerian, wild lettuce.
Hypotensive
Herbs that reduce elevated blood pressure: cramp bark, garlic, onion, yarrow, hawthorn berries.
Laxative
Herbs that stimulate bowel movement: cascara sagrada, yellow dock, rhubarb root.
Lymphatic
Herbs that support the health and activity of the lymphatic system: cleaver, calendula, echinacea.
Nervine
Herbs that calm nervous tension and nourish the nerves: chamomile, hops, oats, skullcap, st. john's wort.
Oxytocic
Herbs that stimulate uterine contractions to assist and induce labor: black cohosh, blue cohosh, rue, squawvine, uva ursi.
Pectoral
Herbs that strengthen and heal the respiratory system: elecampagne, coltsfoot, comfrey, mullein.
Rubefacient
Herbs that increase the flow of blood to the surface of the skin and produces redness. They draw inflammation and congestions from deeper areas: nettle, mustard seed, cayenne, horseradish, black pepper, pine or thyme oil.
Sedative
Herbs that quiet the nervous system: valerian, skullcap, passion flower, wood betony, chamomile, catnip.
Sialogogue
Herbs that promote the secretion and flow of saliva: echinacea, black pepper, cayenne, ginger, licorice.
Stimulants
Herbs that increase the energy of the body, quicken circulation, break up obstructions and congestion: cayenne, ginger, horseradish, mustard, wormwood.
Styptic
Herbs that reduce or arrest external bleeding due to astringent action on blood vessels: yarrow, horsetail, cayenne, plantain.
Tonic
Herbs that stimulate nutrition by improving the assimilation of essential nutrients, they improve systemic tone giving increased vigor, energy and strength to the tissues of either specific organs or to the whole body.
-Nerve tonics: skullcap, lobelia, valerian, oats.
-Heart tonics: hawthorn, ginseng, motherwort.
-Stomach tonics: agrimony, elecampagne, gentian.
-Liver tonics: dandelion, sassafras, cascara. -Biliary tonics: oregon grape, goldenseal, rhubarb, parsley, wild yam.
-Sexual tonics: damiana, ginseng, dong quai, burdock, licorice.
Vasodilator
Herbs that expand blood vessels and allow increased circulation: ginkgo, feverfew, siberian ginseng, ginger, cayenne.
Vulnerary
Herbs that help the body to heal wounds by promoting cell growth and repair: comfrey, calendula, chickweed, st. john's wort, marshmallow, aloe vera, rosemary, thyme, slippery elm.

SAVORY- stomach ache, gas, diarrhea, cough, colds / flu
SORREL- kidneys, diuretic, liver
TARRAGON- digestion, tooth ache, oral anesthetic, infections
THYME- “Mother of Thyme”, women disorders, lungs, bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, brain, menstruation
TUMERIC-cleans arteries, heart disease, cholesterol
EXTERNAL USE-
ACHES- add10 drops of rosemary oil to your bath
ARTHRITIS, RHEUMATIC PAIN- cinnamon twig decoction used as a compress, horseradish root poultice
BLEEDING- pour cayenne pepper (capsicum) on the area, or take it oral for internal bleeding
BOILS-fenugreek seed poultice
BUG BITES- rub a basil leaf or clove oil on the area to relieve itching and inflammation
CIRCULATION- sprinkle a little cayenne in your socks
HEADACHES / MIGRAINES - mint, basil or rosemary; tea to drink, compress on head
HEART ATTACK / STROKE- mix 2-3 tsp cayenne powder with a little warm water and drink; and get to the hospital now!
HEMORRHOIDS- garlic clove inserted into the rectum at bed
INSOMNIA- drink tea made with1 tsp of anise or dill seeds. Fill a sock with poppy or dill seeds, put in your bed, or on head
ITCHING- wash with 2-3 drops of peppermint oil diluted in 10 ml of water
MUSCLE PAIN- peppermint oil applied topically to area, horseradish root poultice
MOTHER’S MILK:
-DECREASE- make tea with 1 tsp of sage leaves, 3 cups daily.
-INCREASE- boil 1 tsp caraway seeds or fenugreek seeds with 8 oz of water drink 3-4 cups daily.
-MILK CONGESTION (to relieve)-5-10 drops of peppermint oil mixed with 25 ml almond or sunflower oil, massage breasts
-NURSING- drink fennel seed infusion to relieve baby’s colic
MOUTH / GUM / THROAT PROBLEMS- sage leaf infusion gargle or mouthwash
NAUSEA- drink ginger decoction, eat crystallized ginger, drink mint infusion
PARASITES / WORMS- steep 3-4 garlic cloves in water or milk for a day and drink the liquid before bed, as well as insert a clove of garlic into the rectum at bed time.
SINUS CONGESTION- mint steam inhaled
TOOTH ACHE- use a drop of clove oil on the affected area
TRAUMA / SHOCK- 1 tsp cayenne pepper powder in warm water and drink as needed
WOUNDS (slow to heal) - sage leaf infusion compress
