GENERAL SUMMARY

Reporting to the HFHS Vice President of Medical Education (VPME), the Director of Medical Education (DME) is responsible for the overall leadership of and accountability for the hospital’s medical education program providing educational training for medical students, residents, fellows, and affiliated physicians. Ensures institutional and program accreditation. Advocates for medical education, strengthens the institutional commitment and negotiates for resources.

In collaboration with the hospital’s chief medical Officer (CMO), identifies and implements strategies to address system, hospital and medical education programmatic goals while meeting the requirements of accrediting and other agencies to ensure program quality.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Administration:

Leads and oversees the development, delivery, coordination, review and assessment of all aspects of training programs and competency-based curriculum for medical education programs to facilitate medical students’, interns’, residents’ and fellows’ professional, ethical and personal development; ensures the quality of didactic and clinical education for all programs.

Evaluates effectiveness of programs; oversees planning for continuous improvement and efficiencies; examines annual program review documentation and conducts periodic internal reviews of programs and sub-specialty programs. Identifies problem areas and program deficiencies, develops consensus for change, oversees change and monitors results.

Supports resident and faculty research and scholarly activities.

Selects, defines expectations, monitors performance and evaluates clerkship and program directors, with input of clinical departments. Promotes professional growth and continuous improvement of programs.

Counsels medical students, interns, residents, fellows, program directors and faculty; investigates situations and resolves issues. Provides guidance on legal matters.

Establishes and participates on the hospital’s medical education committees; ensures committee oversight of policies and procedures, stipends and position allocation, duty hours, resident supervision, curriculum and evaluation, resident status, program accreditation and changes.

Establishes, communicates and enforces policies and procedures.

Advocates for resources (financial support, protected time, space, technology, reference materials, and administrative support) to ensure effective implementation and support of programs.

Demonstrates for clerkship and program directors, faculty, students, residents and fellows, the art and science of medicine, clinical teaching methods, humanism, professionalism and the importance of clinical inquiry through activities such as inpatient teaching rounds, morning report and clinic precepting; serves as role model.

Represents HFHS medical education with regulatory and accreditation agencies, universities and other healthcare systems; through presentations and participation on system-wide and state committees and active participation in appropriate professional associations.

Monitors, influences and accommodates changes in medical education-related federal and state policy and funding.

Promotes the integration of patient satisfaction tactics in program and educational activities; supports service excellence principles and leadership behaviors.

Accountability:

Ensures compliance with accreditation requirements; reviews and co-signs all documents and correspondence relative to accreditation.

Ensures development and execution of contractual agreements and program letters of agreement with external institutions for required rotations.

Ensures that the hospital does not place excessive reliance on residents for service as opposed to education; oversees the well-being of all medical students, interns, residents and fellows.

Ensures appropriate intern, resident and fellow recruitment, selection and orientation, educational and work environment, supervision, definition of responsibilities, evaluation, compliance with duty-hour standards and participation in patient safety and quality of care education.

Ensures compliance with the Intern Resident Information System (IRIS) requirements to capture Medicare reimbursement information for the development of the Medicare hospital cost report developed by the system reimbursement office. Manages hospital Cap.

Presents an annual report to the Organized Medical Staff(s) and the Governing Body(s) of the sponsoring institution.

Responds to information requests and prepares reports.

Planning:

Develops and implements strategic initiatives to align and integrate medical education within the System.

Identifies educational priorities, goals and strategies to improve the educational enterprise and enhance the learning climate.

Participates in the development of system-wide operating and capital budgets related to medical education activities and structure. Ensures budget management.

Promotes the development of competency-based curriculum and continuing medical education programs for program directors, faculty, senior staff and private physicians.

Ensures the development of coordinated program plans in the event of a disaster or interruption in patient care.

Customer Focus:

Establishes effective collaborative relationships with hospital chief executive officers, chief medical officers, system leadership, medical colleges and accrediting agencies.

Incorporates perspectives and concerns of medical students, residents and faculty relative to the educational enterprise and learning climate in planning.

Supervision Exercised:

Oversees the work of medical education clerkship and program directors.

Personal Interaction:

Regular contacts with faculty, medical students, interns, residents, fellows, system leadership, hospital chief executive officers, chief operating officers, Leadership Council members, Management Council members, employees, corporate management services personnel, physicians and other employees. Frequent presentations and training programs provided to above.

REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Proven skills leading a medical education program. Ability to obtain management, staff and physician involvement and accountability in achieving specific outcomes. Ability to manage complex issues. Excellent teaching skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Education: Physician with ACGME- or AOA-approved post-doctoral training.

Minimum Experience: ACGME Programs:
Ten years primary physician service following completion of post-doctoral training.
Seven years experience in a medical education program.
Appropriate medical staff appointment.
Appropriate faculty appointment.
AOA Programs:
Three years practice experience.
Three years experience as teaching faculty in an osteopathic graduate medical education program or college of osteopathic medicine.

Certification/Licensure: ACGME: Board certification in selected field of medicine.
AOA: Board certification within three years of qualifying.
State of Michigan License to practice allopathic or osteopathic medicine.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Some exposure to communicable diseases through employee/patient interactions on the units.
