Transportation
Henry Catlin sailed from Sheerness, aboard the Asiatic on May 28th 1843 and arrived at Van Diemen's Land23rd September 1843. The voyage took 118 days. It left Sheerness with 188 prisoners, 186 of who survived the trip. The Master of the ship was George Barlow, the Surgeon Andrew Sinclair. [Source Perth Dead Persons Society]
Early Years in Australia and Marriage
Henry was granted a Ticket of Leave on 5th February 1850, having served just over half of his 14-year sentence. He received a Conditional Pardon 16 Nov 1852.
Henry married Harriet Coffee 18 October 1852 at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Hobart, County of Buckingham, Van Diemen's Land. His occupation was noted as 'shoemaker'.
Henry and Harriet travelled to Bendigo, Victoria where Henry tried his hand at gold mining.However, on all documents after 1875 his occupation is 'shoemaker' or boot-maker'

They had nine children:
1. Ellen CatlinNo birth or death certificates exist but there is an annotation of birth certificate of the next Ellen Catlin stating 'Ellen 45 days'.
2. EllenBorn August 24 Long Gully, Bendigo, Victoria. Died
'Helen Christina' Catlin Bendigo Victoria aged 35 years. Ellen married and had three children.
3. Harriet Jane CatlinBorn 1858 Long Gully, Bendigo, Victoria.
Born as Harriet but always referred to as Jane on later documents. Died at BendigoVictoriain 1933 aged 75 years. No children.
4. Henry CatlinBorn 1860 Long Gully, Bendigo, Victoria. Died at Sandhurst, Bendigo in 1861.
5. Maria CatlinBorn November 1 1862 Long Gully, Bendigo, Victoria. Married John inSandhurst, Bendigo. Died Bendigo1 Feb 1932 aged 69.
6. Elizabeth CatlinBorn 1866 Sandhurst, Bendigo. Married Thomas and moved to Pt. Nepean, Victoria. Elizabeth died in 1941 in Essendon, Victoria aged 75.
7. Henry CatlinBorn 1868 Sandhurst, Bendigo, Victoria.
8. William Charles CatlinBorn 1871 Sandhurst, Bendigo, Victoria. Known as Charles. Served in World War 1 and died 29 May 1919. Buried in KarrakattaGeneralCemetery, Perth.
9. Frederick Thomas CatlinBorn November 25 1875 at Sandhurst, Bendigo, Victoria. Married Hilda Mary in Bendigo and had five children. Died 1916 at Narranderra, New South Wales.
Death of Harriet and Henry Catlin
Harriet Catlin died in 1889 at Sandhurst, Bendigo, Victoria aged 55.
Henry Catlin died on 10 August 1918 at the age of 91 in the PublicHospital in Bendigo, Victoria. He suffered senility and heart failure. He was buried 12 August 1918 at WhiteHillsCemetery, Bendigo, Victoria.
