Dear Parents/Guardians of Henrico Elementary Students,
This spring, a committee of teachers and administrators completed a review of the HCPS mathematics acceleration plan based on careful analysis of data, feedback from staff, and input/suggestions from parents. This review resulted in modifications to the current plan. With the revised plan, all eligible students will have access to an accelerated mathematics pathway beginning in grade 5. An extended timeframe for acceleration will allow students to strengthen their understanding by exploring compacted content in greater depth. The following revisions will be implemented in the 2013-14 school year:
1. Students will be identified for math acceleration in grade 5 using a common rubric.
- The rubric will be composed of multiple criteria including standardized test data, academic achievement, and student work characteristics.
- Students previously identified gifted in math or IA will automatically qualify for math acceleration.
2. The acceleration model will compact three grade levels of content over two school years in grades 5 and 6.
- In grade 5, the Accelerated Math 5/6 curriculum will include the entire 5th grade SOL and approximately one half of the 6th grade SOL. Students will take the 5th grade SOL test in the spring.
- In grade 6, the Accelerated Math 6/7 curriculum will include the remaining 6th grade SOL and the entire 7th grade SOL. Students will take the 7th grade SOL test in the spring.
3. High achieving students who did not participate in the Accelerated Math 5/6 curriculum during their 5th grade year will be offered an opportunity for placement in Course 2 in grade 6.
- Eligible students will be identified based on the combination of a spring RIT score in the 96th percentile and a pass advanced score on the grade 5 SOL.
- Students will be clustered together so that the Course 2 teachers may provide additional support with 6th grade SOL as needed.
4. A second entry point for middle school math acceleration may be provided through a summer bridge program (beginning summer 2014).
- To be eligible for the bridge program, students must meet the criteria from a rubric that includes standardized test data, academic achievement, and student work characteristics.
We recognize and value our parent’s partnership in supporting their children’s success. If any parent has questions or concerns regarding our mathematics or any other academic program, we invite you to contact your building principal for additional information.
