HEMISPHERES LEVEL 3 - UNIT 3 - PART A

Int. John and Mark's apt. – morning

Mark is tying his tie in the mirror.

John is reading the comics in the newspaper. Mark enters and pours himself a cup of coffee.

MARK

Morning.

John

Hi, Mark. Big day?

MARK

Yeah, uh, how'd you know?

JOHN

That's your power tie. The last time you wore that, you had a big presentation.

MARK

You're right. I'm meeting with a new client. What are you doing?

JOHN

I'm reading these comics. This cat always makes me laugh!

MARK

No, I mean what's on your schedule for today?

JOHN

I might go to the gym, I have a ton of laundry to do. I can't forget to go by the ChelseaArtsCenter and see how Martina is doing with her new café...

MARK

Did you stop working on your play?

JOHN

Of course not. I'll get back to it. At some point.

MARK

At some point today?

JOHN

Listen, I'm frustrated. I've got writer's block and that is not helping me.

MARK

Well, you're definitely not gonna finish your play if you keep on procrastinating by going to the gym and grabbing coffee with Martina.

JOHN

Why do you care?

MARK

Because I help you with the finances at the ArtsCenter, remember? And I gotta tell you, you need to finish the play. You need a hit.

JOHN

More pressure! Great, just what I need!

MARK

John, you're my best friend, but this is the same stuff you pulled in high school whenever final exams came around.

JOHN

No, I didn't. And I won't do that with this play; it's too important.

MARK

You'll waste time doing all sorts of things that have nothing to do with your writing, and then at the last minute you'll be stressing out. Why not save yourself the hassle and just do the work?

JOHN

You don't get it. It’s not easy to write a play.

MARK

When you focus, your writing is amazing. You just need to sit down and do it. (Looks at watch.) Look, I have to go. I don’t want to be late for my meeting.

Mark leaves.

FREEZE - Chaz steps in.

CHAZ

Looks like John's day isn't starting off well. How did Mark predict John's behavior? Let's take a look.

Replay clip.

MARK

You'll waste time doing all sorts of things that have nothing to do with your writing, and then at the last minute you'll be stressing out. Why not save yourself the hassle and just do the work?

[end clip]

CHAZ

It seems that Mark knows John well enough to predict how his day will go (checks watch). And I predict that Mark's honest talk will help him stop procrastinating. (holds stomach) My stomach is growling. I predict that it is close to lunchtime(checks watch). It is. I better stop procrastinating and get to the sandwich shop (walks off).

HEMISPHERES LEVEL 3 - UNIT 3 - PART B

John's car - moments later

John is driving through the city, listening to talk radio.

Dr. CRANE

And we're back on "Help-Radio," taking your calls to find out what's bothering you and how we can help. I'm Dr. Crane, your compassionate confidant. Up next is Shelly from Brooklyn. Shelly? What's your question?

SHELLY

Thanks for taking my call, Dr. Crane. People call me a good-natured person. I like to take care of my family and work full-time, but it is exhausting. I have so many things that I need to do, but I just can't seem to get around to finishing any of them.

DR. CRANE

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re having this problem, Shelly. It sounds like you have quite a bit on your plate and that you are under a lot of pressure. Am I right?

SHELLY

Absolutely!

DR. CRANE

That must be hard on you.OK, folks, if anyone can help Shelly out, dial 1-800-555-TALK. That's 1-800-555-TALK.

John driving, perks up, picks up & dials his cell phone.

DR. CRANE (CONT'D)

Well, Shelly, it sounds like a classic case of procrastination. Let's see what our callers think. Who's this on the line?

JOHN

This is John from New York. I wanted to tell Shelly I know exactly how she feels. My roommate just got annoyed with me about the same thing. I can't seem to get around to doing what I need to do. I always find other things to fill my time. And I hate being under pressure.

Dr. CRANE

Listen, it's time to stop making excuses and just do the work. I like to focus on one task at a time. Try it. You'll feel better when you see what you've accomplished, but be patient; you won’t change your habits overnight.

Shelly

Thanks, Dr. Crane, you really helped. And thanks to you, too, John. It's nice to know I'm not alone.

JOHN

Same here.

Dr. CRANE

Time for a quick break, we'll be right back.

Chaz steps in.

ChaZ

It's nice to have someone to talk to about your problems. Even if it'ssomebody on the radio! How did John commiserate with Shelly? Let's listen again…

JOHN

I wanted to tell Shelly I know exactly how she feels. My roommate just got annoyed with me about the same thing.

Chaz steps back in.

CHAZ

(He pulls out a cell phone.) Hmm. "Help Radio." What was that number again? (dials) Hello, Dr. Crane?
