Statistics New Zealand media advisory - Telegrams, e-books, corsets and jeans - tracking communications and clothing in the CPI
Back in 1930, New Zealanders used to send 18 million telegrams a year. These days Statistics New Zealand no longer tracks telegrams, but there are more cellphones in the country than people. We also know the use of the internet via broadband is increasing rapidly and the purchase of e-books continues to rise.
Statistics NZ has just released Consumers Price Index (CPI) information about communications and clothing prices in the latest issue of Price Index News, available at http://www.stats.govt.nz/tools_and_services/services/newsletters/price-index-news/oct-12.aspx
In terms of the changing face (and price) of fashion, in 1924 Statistics NZ measured the price of bolts of Japanese silk, wool gabardine and bloomers – nowadays it's jeans, T-shirts and tracksuit pants. In between times, fur felt hats and worsted suits have been and gone, as have tweed skirts, locknit underslips, and corsets. Clothing prices have risen far more slowly in the past two decades than prices overall.
