Requirement for Scholarship:

The Helen Hopper Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship in the amount of $1000 will be awarded to a person or persons meeting the following requirements:

  1. A Virginia high school senior who plans to attend college with a major in Family Life Education. *
  1. A college student enrolled in a Family Life program.
  1. A person pursuing a Masters Degree in a Family Life program, who plans to teach the subject.
  1. If no applicant qualifies under categories 1, 2, or 3 above, the annual award funds may be made available to the Family and Consumer Sciences Division of the State Department of Education for workshops or other presentations of Family Life Education.
  1. If none of the above options are used, an area or county group of Family and Consumer Sciences teachers may request the annual funds for use in workshops, programs, or other programs or projects on Family Life Education.

Scholarship Policies:

  1. The scholarship applicant under categories 1 and 2 must be a graduate of a Virginia high school. The applicant’s proposed program must lead to a degree in Family Life Education and qualify the recipient for a Collegiate Professional Certificate.
  1. In options 1 and 2, the student with the greatest financial need will be awarded the scholarship.
  1. The deadline for submitting completed scholarship application is set by the VATFACS executive board.
  1. The recipient of the scholarship will be notified by May 30 of the year the application is made.
  1. All parts of the application must be completed and attachments present in order to qualify.
  1. A check in the amount of the scholarship will be mailed by July 31 to the treasurer of the college in which the applicant is enrolled.
  1. If the scholarship recipient does not complete the planned course of study or drops out during the year, the college shall be directed to refund the unused amount of the scholarship to the treasurer of VATFACS.
  1. By May 1 of the end of the scholarship year, the scholarship recipient must request the registrar of the college to send a transcript of grades to the Past President of VATFACS by way of Virginia’s Family and Consumer Sciences Specialist, Virginia Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120.
  1. The recipient is also expected to make a written report of personal progress to the Past President of VATFACS by July 1 following the scholarship year.

*This scholarship is intended to help educate those persons interested in family life education, and with that in mind, the scholarship committee will interpret the term family life education.
