RULES

OF THE

NINE INCORPORATED TRADES

AS REVISED 1884

QUALIFICATIONS OF MEMBERS

  1. All persons who have paid the dues of admission to any individual Trade and to the General Fund shall be members of the Nine Incorporated Trades, and shall be entitled to vote as such.
  2. The dues of admission payable to the General Fund shall be as follows, viz. :-

Which shall be added to Capital

Stamps and Clerk’s fees are payable in addition.

GENERAL MEETINGS

  1. There shall be stated general meetings as follows viz.-

In May – Second Wednesday of, at 7 o’clock p.m. – Election of Directors of the Dundee Lunatic Asylum.

In October – First Monday of, at 3 o’clock p.m. – Election of Convener

In November – Betwixt the first and tenth days of, at 11 o’clock, a.m. – Election of Harbour Trustees. Nomination betwixt 11 and 11.30 a.m. and Election of Director of High School.

At such Meetings the Elections shall immediately follow the nominations. If the candidates named exceed the vacancies to be filled up, any candidate can require the vote to be taken by ballot, otherwise the election shall be by open voting. And the Convener may by his own authority call, and shall be bound when required by three Deacons, or ten Members to call, Special Meetings to vote addresses, consider Petitions, or to give opinions upon general questions, and to give instructions to the Managers of the General Fund in matters of importance.

  1. Such meetings shall be called by intimation to each Deacon five days prior to the Meeting that he may give intimation to the several Members of his Trade. All the stated Meetings of the Nine Trades, and also of the general Fund Court, shall be for the transaction of general business as well as for the special purposes enumerated. In cases of equal divisions at voting, the Convener or Chairman shall have a casting vote as well as a deliberative vote.
  2. The Clerk shall call and attend all Meetings of the Trades, keep the minutes of such Meetings, and conduct all correspondence of the affairs of the Trades.

THE GENERAL FUND COURT

  1. The General Fund Court shall consist of twenty Members viz. :- The Convener, the immediately preceding Convener, the nine Deacons, and nine Assessors. In the absence of the Convener, his predecessor shall preside, whom failing, the Deacon present of the Senior trade. Seven shall be a quorum.
  2. There shall be stated Meetings of the General Fund court, held at 7 o’clock p.m., as follows, viz. :- in March – First Wednesday

In Novemberdo – Scrutinizing Lists of Poor and adjourn for division of Funds to Poor, election of Clerk, and Boxmaster, and appointment of Auditing Committee.

In December – first Wednesday

  1. The Court shall have power annually to appoint the Boxmaster to the General Fund and the Trade’s Clerk, who must be a Member of one of the Trades. The Court shall have the management of the Trade’s revenues, and after salaries and other charges are paid shall divide such portion of the balance as they think fir among the poor of the Trades. Members or their widows receiving full shares o the benefit, but children only receiving each half of such share, and no more than one share to be paid in respect of any one member.
  2. The Deacons and assessors shall produce signed lists of the Poor of their Trades before receiving any part of the funds and the Trades’ Book to show the Members who have entered during the year.
  3. The Boxmaster shall find security to the extent of £100 for his intromissions, and at no time shall he have more than £10 in his hands.
  4. An Abstract of the General Fund Accounts shall be rendered annually to the convener and to the deacons, to be laid before their constituents.
  5. The Convener and Deacons and Assessors shall, if possible, all attend St. Andrew’s Church on the first Sunday after the annual election and occupy the Trades Seats.
