Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Git Ye Here! Ye Hear?

Setting The Scene
The year is 1733. Georgia, the last of the thirteen colonies has just been organized, but the King George II is dissatisfied with the number of people settling in his colonies. He declares, “Let worthy people come forth and people the lands in my American dominion.“ But nothing seems to work. People are still scared off by tales of Jamestown and the mosquito-infested swamps. Besides, the New World doesn’t have cable.
In desperation, the King contacts you, the most famous advertising executive for the elite real estate firm of Beyem, Cellum, Eadem, and Spiddemout, Inc. The King hires you to develop a slick advertising campaign to get people to move from England to one of the American Colonies. He tells you that you must create a presentation that includes:

  • a catchy slogan that is both creative and convincing
  • a visual aid (small poster or other item) that is no larger than 24 inches cubed
  • an informational pamphlet that includes information on the following
    (1) the geography of the colony. Where is it? What does it look like? What is the weather like? Please remember that the year is 1733. The colonies might not look exactly like this when they are states in 2003.
    (2) the economics of the colony. What crops does the colony grow? Whatindustries are there? Who does the labor? Is there slavery?
    (3) the government of the colony. Who rules the colony? What makes thepowerful people powerful, their money or their religion?
    (4) the people of the colony. What kind of people live there? Farmers? Merchants? How are relations with Native Americans?
    (5) the opportunities that a person might find in the colony. Should a personcome to your colony to get rich, or to find good farmland, or for religiousfreedom?
    (6) several good reasons why a person should go to your colony. Why is livingin your colony better than living in England? What makes it better than livingin any other colony?
    (7) a catchy slogan or theme to convince people to move to your colony.
    (8) all of the above CREATIVELY!!!

How It Works
In order to get people to come to your colony, you will have to take all of the wonderful information about your colony and roll it into one seamless, professional advertising package. The best campaigns combine factual information and creativity. Do not sacrifice facts for fun stuff, and do not get so mired in facts that you forget the fun stuff. Of course you know this because that’s precisely how you came to become a famous ad agent.

Due Date
You will have the remainder of class Monday and part of the class on Wednesday to complete the project. Without exception, the presentation, pamphlet and visual aid are due on Thursday, September 14.

Grading
Your advertising campaign will count a total of 45 points. The breakdown of that grade is as follows:
