Amalgam “to be or not to be?” – FD Group 2 (Bearsted Suite)

Nish Suchak BDS, MSc, Dip Ed – (GDP & FD Trainer)

Nish Suchak is a principal in General Dental Practice and a Dental Foundation Trainer, with a very keen interest in hypnosis, dental foundation training, dental education and dental politics.

The combination of the Minamata Convention (UNEP, 2013) with countries world-wide agreeing to reduction and ultimate cessation in the production and use of mercury containing products and World Health Organization (2010) advising a ‘phasing down’ of dental amalgam will “without doubt” change the practice of dentistry in the coming years.

Lynch et al (2006) have confirmed that the teaching of posterior composites is now well established in Undergraduate teaching schools both in UK and Ireland and also in other countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Spain, Brazil and Iran. Markedly, some UK undergraduate schools do not teach the use or placement of amalgams in their curriculum.

Amalgam is still the material of choice for many current UK dentists in primary care, to restore posterior teeth, as it is strong, easy to work with and produces reliable results. The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks -SCENIHR (2008) carried out a in-depth evidence based research and concluded that “dental amalgam is a safe material to use in restorative dentistry with respect to patients”.

This mini workshop will explore the advantages and disadvantages of both amalgams and composite, your level of experience in provision of amalgams and composites give you tips on amalgam overlays and also help you to decide on the relevant restoration for the particular tooth cavity.

AIM: The use of Amalgam restorations in Primary Dental Care

OBJECTIVES:

·  To understand the different constituents of the restorative materials and its associated properties.

·  To understand which restorative material to use for best outcome

·  To have knowledge on the current guidelines and evidence based literature with regards to the restorative material

·  To understand the different cavity designs required for the appropriate restoration

·  To have knowledge on both amalgam and composite overlays.

The workshop will include:

·  Discussion of the constituents and properties of both amalgam and composite

·  Advantages and disadvantages of both amalgam and composite

·  Discussion on the current guidelines and trends with regards to amalgam and composite

·  Presentation of cavity designs and tips on both Amalgam and composite overlays

·  Final Summary

·  Questions and Answers

·  Feedback
