2009 Business Meeting

I. Call to order:

A. Meeting called to order at 12:30 pm by Chair Carma Byland.

B. The minutes of the 2008 meeting were approved unanimously.

II. Nominations and Elections:

A. Ballots for elections for Vice Chair Elect and Student Representative were distributed. There are no additional nominations made from the floor.

B. The slate of paper readers (i.e., submission evaluation committee members) was approved by acclamation.

C. All candidates for vice-chair elect and student representative were allowed to introduce themselves. The election results were as follows:

1. Vice Chair Elect: Nichole Egbert (Kent State University)

2. Student Representative: LaKesha Anderson (George Mason University)

III. Officer Reports:

A. Chair Report- Carma Bylund

1. Carma noted that NCA is healthy financially.

2. Carma reported on several events from Legislative Assembly:

a. Solitary confinement and torture resolution did not pass

b. Remove fees from short courses did not pass

c. Amendment to change board selection did not pass

d. Amendment to NCA fees did not pass

B. Vice-Chair Report- Susan Morgan

1. Submission Report: Susan thanked the paper readers for their service. 182 papers and 10 panels were submitted; 105 papers (58%) and 5 panels (50%) were accepted.

2. 57 people were estimated to be in attendance at the meeting. Susan noted that the room was not large enough to hold everyone (many people were turned away as meeting began). Requesting a larger room for future meetings was discussed.

3. Susan noted several activities of the NCA Research Board (of which she is a member):

a. The research board has been visiting with NIH and NSF to encourage funding opportunities.

b. The research board will be sponsoring a grant writing workshop this summer for communication researchers that have never received federal funding. The conference will be held in Chicago from June 10-13th.

c. The research board will be involved with I-tunes University. Past presentations can be posted there.

d. The research board will be helping to update the social science “white paper.”

C. Vice-Chair Elect Report- Kami Silk

1. Kami will be planning the 2010 conference’s health communication panels in San Francisco. The conference dates are 11/14-11/17. The conference theme will be “Building Bridges.”

2. Kami noted that scholar to scholar sessions would again be used at the 2010 conference and that they are not viewed as “lower quality” slots. Rather, scholar to scholar is a different format that allows for more interaction.

3. Kami stated that she would like to see more practitioners at and involved with the 2010 conference.

IV. Award Presentations:

A. Carma announced MA and Dissertation of the Year. These were awarded at ICA 2009, but also announced at here (as the awards are jointly given by ICA and NCA).

1. MA Thesis of the Year: Abigail Preston, University of Southern California

2. Dissertation of the Year: Sally Dunlap, University of Pennsylvania

B. Susan presented the three Top Paper Awards:

1. Problematic Integration and Decision Making in Prenatal Communication: Providers’ Perspectives by Marianne Matthias (Roudebush VA Medical Center/Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis)

2. Using Information to Manage Uncertainty during Transplantation by Anne Stone (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), Allison Scott (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), Summer Carnett (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), and Dale Brashers (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign)

3. It's Like Nothing Else I've Ever Experienced': Examining the Metaphors of Residential Hospice Volunteers by Zachary White (University of Tulsa) and Cristina Gilstrap (Drury University)

4. When the Truth Hurts: Toward a Validation of the Physician Mistake Disclosure (PMD) Model by Annegret F. Hannawa (Arizona State University)

C. Carma presented the Article of the Year Award to XXXXX

D. Carma presented the Book of the Year Award to Lynn Harter, Phyllis Japp, & Christina Beck for Narratives, Health, & Healing: Communication Theory, Research, & Practice

E. Carma presented the Outstanding Scholar Award to Teresa Thompson (introduced by Roxanne Parrott and others).

V. Proposed Changes in By-laws:

A. Carma proposed several changes to the division bylaws.

1. A resolution passed clarifying duties of the unit chair, notably in regard to the awards process.

2. A resolution passed acknowledging that the ICA/NCA Dissertation of the Year Award should acknowledge that there is also an MA Thesis of the Year Award.

3. A resolution passed postulating that the immediate past chair is charged with organizing a tribute for the winner of the Outstanding Scholar Award during the business meeting.

VI. Announcements from the Floor:

A. Dave Buller encouraged Health Communication Divisions (NCA & ICA) to find a donor for the MA and Dissertation of the Year. It was proposed to seek out funding from various publishers.

B. Dave Buller invited everyone to ICA in Singapore as well as to an ICA Health Communication Preconference.

C. Ashley Duggan invited everyone to IARR in Isreal.

D. Several positions were announced, and all were posted in the following Health Com Digest.

E. University of Dayton noted that there would be a scholarship in Teresa Thompson’s name.

F. Micheal Stephenson was thanked for his service as Senior Editor of Health Communication. Brian Southwell was announced as the next Senior Editor.

G. It was announced that Health Communication will move to 8 issues a year.

H. Evelyn Ho and Ashley Duggan reminded everyone that there would be a preconference in Health Communication before the next NCA in San Francisco.

VII. Passing of the gavel:

A. Carma Bylund passed the gavel to Susan Morgan.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:48 p.m.
