Health and Wellness Data
Screening Data
The wellness checkpoint data should be entered as follows:
- HealthCheckScreening datashould be entered into the “WVEIS on the Web-Health tab” then “Screening”. The HealthCheck and school screens may be entered into this same area. The “oral health screening” is NOT for the required dental exam but an oral screening completed by the medical provider. Please do not enter dental examination data in this area;
- Dental Examination data will be entered into the WV Statewide Immunization Information System (WVSIIS) under the Dental Module in the future. At this time, counties are asked to maintain the paper record and keep track of completion via spreadsheet or checklist. Each public school will be populated with directory data to allow access to school specific reports on missing data. The Dental Module should be piloted this summer and hopefully opened in the fall of 2016. The WVDE and WVDHHR apologizes for the delay in opening of this module as the single sign-on with WVEIS and WVSIIS is still in the completion phase which halts progress of the dental and lead module;
- Lead module is in the process of being purchased through WVDHHR and the Early Childhood Advisory Committee (ECAC). It will be prepopulated with the blood leads already reported to the WVDHHR-Lead Program to facilitate Universal Pre-K enrollment for students under the auspices of Head Start regulations. This will also be part of the WVEIS and WVSIIS single sign-on.
- Immunization data will be entered into WVSIIS. WVSIIS will be the state repository through the single sign-on access from WVEIS to WVSIIS for school personnel. Each public school will be populated with directory data to allow access to school specific reports on missing data. The WVEIS immunization data and any newly entered data from schools will show as historical data in WVSIIS to differentiate between data entered by medical providers and schools.
Missing HealthCheckScreening Data
Once a new enterer has been screened through a HealthCheck/comprehensive physical, they will not need further screenings to continue Pre-K or Kindergarten within the public school system. After a new enterer meets the enrollment criteria, all future screening will be based on school, teacher, parent or medical provider referrals (Child Find) related to individual student needs, not massive screenings. As we are all aware, once entering into the educational system, any potential education and medical deficit(s) are assessed and identified on a daily basis within the classroom and school setting. As school systems work closely with each student’s family, medical and dental home to ensure coordinated care with proper diagnosis and treatment, the success of each child becomes evident.
This shift from massive screening is a true effort to utilize the time of teachers and professional support personnel (school nurses, audiologist, speech and language pathologist, etc.) to provide more direct services to students with identified needs and specialized health care while allowing more time for individualized assessments and follow-ups from referrals. These key professional support personnel should ensure teachers and early education staff are aware of any missing HealthCheck screening components after follow-up with the parent/guardian and medical home has proven unsuccessful.
