2014 Gordon Graydon Sr PS Ski Trip to Hockley Valley

In January and February Gordon Graydon Sr PS will be providing an opportunity to students to participate in a ski / snowboard education program at Hockley Valley Resort Limited, Adamo Holding LIP (hereinafter collectively referred to as Hockley Valley Resort). The trips will be held on Tuesdays January 14th, 21st, 28th and February 44h.

This program provides the students with exposure to a winter sport and the opportunity to learn to ski or enhance their current skill level. The ski program is educational in nature and provides lessons, equipment rental and supervised skiing time for the beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers. It should be understood that the purpose of the excursion is educational. Lessons are mandatory for all groups. All students must participate in a formal lesson, and must be tested or grouped appropriately as determined by a qualified skiing/snowboarding/snow-blading instructor. The program is also geared to allow the student to see their progress and advance to the next skill level by the fourth lesson.

Students will be transported by school bus and will depart at approximately 9 am and be back by 6 pm. Parents are asked to be at the school for 5:30 pm to pick up their child. Students are to review the handouts on the alpine responsibility code and the dressing for a cold environment that is provided once they are registered in the program. It is also recommended that they bring a lunch or money to purchase one at the chalet snack bar. When skiing and in the chalet students will be supervised by teachers, parent volunteers and Hockley Valley Ski School staff. It is expected that they behave appropriately and according to the Gordon Graydon Sr PS (posted on the website), the Peel District School Board’s Code of Conduct for students and the Alpine Responsibility Code or their lift tickets could be revoked. The attached forms are required to be signed in order to participate in this outdoor recreation and skiing / snowboarding education program.

Helmets are mandatory for all students, staff and parents regardless of skill level. If you do not have one they can be rented for an additional $5.00 for the day trip or $15.00 for the 4 day trip. Please add this amount to your total cost. If you have CSA approved ski, hockey or bike helmets they are acceptable. It is highly recommended that snowboarders wear wrist guards.

INHERENT RISK: Skiing and snowboarding is a sport with physical demands and inherent risks that are beyond the control of Hockley Valley, and the Peel District School Board. Falls, collisions and other incidents may occur and cause injury. Participants must assume the inherent risks of the sport. Following all rules and procedures can reduce the risk of injury. Failure to follow rules will result in students losing their lift tickets and future resort privileges.

Students and parents must understand that they bear the responsibility for any injury that might occur. The Peel District School Board does not provide medical expense insurance on behalf of the students participating in this activity. All participants must have medical coverage provided through OHIP or alternate medical insurance through another carrier.

EQUIPMENT: Hockley Valley provides rental equipment. Bindings on equipment reduce the risk of injury when falling. They will not release under all circumstances, and they do not guarantee safety in all cases. It is strongly suggested that snowboarders provide and use their own wrist guards. Parents must accept responsibility for equipment that is lost or damaged (other than reasonable wear and tear). Helmets are mandatory for all regardless of skiing, snowboarding and skill level.

SKIER’S/SNOWBOARDER’S RESPONSIBILITY CODE: The Ontario Ski Resorts Association has produced a Responsibility Code which Hockley Valley and the Peel District School Board requires that you know and obey. Skiers, snowboarders and snowbladers must always be in control, be able to stop and change direction to avoid collisions with people or objects. Hockley Valley may revoke a ski ticket for violation of the code or other unacceptable conduct.

The chance of an injury occurring can be reduced by carefully following instructions at all times while engaged in the activity. If you choose to participate in skiing or snowboarding on January 14th, 21st, 28th and February 4th, you must understand that you take the responsibility for any injury that might occur.

CLOTHING: Students must bring a hat, gloves, a winter jacket and some form of ski or waterproof / resistant pants. More details with regards to clothing will be sent once students are registered.

SKILL CLASSIFICATION: All students must be classified according to their expertise for the purpose of program planning. These stages are consistent with the operations of member resorts of the Ontario Ski Resorts Association. If the instructor at the ski resort feels the student has been classified in the incorrect category it is understood that the ski resort instructor may change the original classification of the parent. (ie. Intermediate to Beginner)

NON-SKIER/SNOWBOARDER has never skied/snowboarded before.

BEGINNER: The student has skied/snowboarded once or twice or a few times per year and has experienced and maintained control on a number of novice hills of varying difficulty. He/she is able to stop and turn with some success.

INTERMEDIATE: The student has skied/snowboarded many occasions and has experienced a variety of hills and different ski areas. He/she can turn and stop under control using recognized formal techniques.

ADVANCED: The student is an experienced and competent skier/snowboarder. He/she has received formal instruction, knows and understands the Responsibility Code and can demonstrate ability to an advanced level. Such students can be called upon to assist in the program.
