Social Eating programme – invitation to bid

Ambition for Ageing is seeking to create partnerships to develop and compare a range of sustainable social eating schemes within a diverse range of communities in Greater Manchester.

Social eating has a number of benefits for the emotional wellbeing of older people. It instils feelings of community, identity and self-worth, provides a sense of structure and routine and establishes a regular event to look forward to. This new programme seeks to increase the number of opportunities for older people to eat together in Greater Manchester, thereby creating a range of social occasions where people feel they belong, can bond with existing friends and make new connections.

The work will be delivered across at least four of the following areas: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside and Wigan. We are looking for a partnership of organisations who will develop a range of social eating projects in Greater Manchester for people over 50 at risk of social isolation. We also want the partnership to produce a guide on how to deliver these projects.

Contract length and value and deadline for bid submissions
The contract period will run from July 2018 until March 2020. The contract value is £250,000. Final deadline for bid submissions 12 noon, Wednesday 9 May 2018.

‘Powerful communities, strong economies’ – a new report by Locality

Locality has called on public service commissioners to take heed of the problems of high-profile outsourcing firms, such as Carillion and Capita, and to commission more local organisations, in the findings of a pilot study. The report, which is part of Locality’s Keep it local campaign’ states that current local authority procurement practices “weakens the viability of local community organisations” and “suck money out of the local area” and calls for “fundamental change” in local government procurement systems, with a greater focus on local organisations. Furthermore, the report states that the commissioning environment remains fractured in its attitude to local organisations, with some procurement officers being more risk averse than others, and urges a “joined-up system”. The report says social value is not well embedded in commissioning but remains “the most useful current framework”.

Take part in a new Social Prescribing Survey

Salford CVS is working with the University of Salford to map social prescribing provision across Greater Manchester. This is an important piece of work as it will help to determine the extent of social prescribing provision as we move forward across GM to develop social prescribing models as part of our Person and Community-Centred Approaches programme.

The aim of this project is to create a 'map' of social prescribing for the whole of GM so that the great work that's already happening can be understood, beacons of good practice identified and shared across GM.

Research to understand victims’ experiences of Hate Crime

NatCen Social Research would like the GMVCSE sector to help for important research to enhance understanding of victims’ experiences of hate crime. The research seeks to explore people’s direct experiences of hate crime, including motivations for and barriers to reporting, and related interactions with the police and support organisations. Our findings will inform recommendations to improve how hate crime is handled in policy and practice.

NatCen is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with almost 50 years’ experience of producing evidence to inform government, public services, charities, and other organisations working to address society’s challenges. This study was commissioned by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, who independently assess the effectiveness and efficiency of police, fire and rescue services in England and Wales.

They would like to talk to anyone who has been a victim of any type of hate crime or hate-related incident in Greater Manchester from January 2017 and would really appreciate the VCSE sector’s help to find individuals who might wish to take part in a research interview in the next few weeks. For more information about this research and next steps, please get in touch on Freephone 0808 169 1224 or .

Invitation for expressions of interest to join a group to represent the patient voice in GM

The Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership are looking for enthusiastic volunteers and patients from across the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester to connect to form a Greater Manchester group to provide the patient voice and make valuable contribution to the work of the General Practice Advisory Group (GPAG) in maintaining and improving health and social care services across the Greater Manchester Health and Social Partnership.

The purpose of the GPAG is to represent General Practice providers, such as GPs, practice nurses etc. ensuring they play an active role in re-shaping the delivery of primary care services, giving and receiving feedback to both the main Greater Manchester Health and Care Board and primary care colleagues. It is intended that the groups will be primarily a digital forum with occasional face to face meetings and with nominated representatives attending and contributing to regular GPAG meetings (which take place at the Partnership offices in Manchester City Centre).

If you would like to become involved please send your expression of interest to stating what you can bring to the role by the 30th April 2018. A welcome meeting will be held mid-May.

At present GMCVO are still trying to establish whether volunteers that are selected to take part in this group will be reimbursed for their out of pocket expenses therefore we recommend that you clarify this with the group leader(s) prior to committing to this project.

‘Making devolution work for women’ event, Friday 27 April, 10.30-2pm, including lunch and refreshments, Manchester Metropolitan University’s Student Union, 21 Higher Cambridge St, Manchester M15 6AD.

It is 100 years since some women first won the vote. But there are still too few women at the top in politics and other positions of power, and our society is still unfair for women. The Fawcett Society is working on a project to make sure that the voices of women from all walks of life are heard in conversations that shape the public services and decisions that affect their lives. The first event will focus on Listening to GM Women’s Voices.

Greater Manchester Food Poverty Alliance Launch event, Tuesday 8th May 2018, 1-4pm, Methodist Central Hall, Oldham Street, Manchester, M1 1JQ

With poverty at disturbingly high levels across Greater Manchester and increasing all the time, many people are struggling to put food on the table, and a healthy, balanced diet may be even further from their reach. Many are also limited by inadequate cooking facilities. The purpose of the launch event is to discuss what action communities and organisations across GM could take to achieve the eventual eradication of food insecurity and thereby create a city region where no-one has to go hungry.

Participants will be coming from across Greater Manchester and will consist of people and organisations from the private, public and social sectors; people with lived experience of food poverty; and leaders who can help to make larger-scale changes. Every organisation that works with people who have lived experience of food poverty, is asked to encourage some of them to attend the meeting. The Alliance, and the Action Plan, will be stronger and have greater integrity if co-produced with people who are ‘experts by experience’.
