Junior Study Guide for Final Exam

Final Exam Overview:

Ø  You will be given a two part final

a.  The first part will consist of an in class timed writing assignment based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown

b.  The second part will consist of multiple choice that will cover literary and grammatical elements we have been working on the entire semester.

Part I: Final Timed Essay Young Goodman Brown

Young Goodman Brown further illustrates the complexities of human morality and our perceived reality, which are themes we have discussed during our American Dream and Great Gatsby Units. Humans are equipped with both the ability to commit sin and the ability to overcome the desire to do so. Morality is defined differently by everyone. Our perception of "sin" is greatly influenced by our belief system.

Prompt

The final timed essay will test your ability to critically analyze pieces of literature and use them to critically apply to real world situations. The final essay will be to discuss whether or not Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown supports the notion that humans are inherently good or inherently evil. Use strong evidence from the text to support your claim.

Guiding Concepts to Keep in Mind

Define the terms inherently, succumb, and prone. Why do we commit sin? What is human nature? Who defines morality? How do we as humans reconcile our nature and our desire?

Preparation for Timed Essay

Ø  Your text must be read thoroughly and more than once.

Ø  Your text must be annotated and vocabulary should be defined throughout

Ø  Discussion notes and participation in discussions are imperative to understanding the text

Ø  All small writing assignments (hwk & classwork) must be completed to receive the most effective feedback and reiterate your understanding of the text
