Health and Leadership Program for Youth ~ Summer 2009

Program Description

The Health and Leadership Program for Youth (HLPY) is a summer opportunity for girls (ages 16-18) from traditionally underserved communities. This program provides “hands on” experience working in a community setting designed to address unique gender bias, broaden the definition of science and health, and provide exposure to positive role models, all within the context of community contribution.

The Health and Leadership Program for Youth consists of 15-20 high school students selected by a committee to participate in a Summer Internship. The program aims to select girls who are from the diverse communities of San Francisco who have a strong interest in medicine, science, public health, health administration, and health policy and a motivation to learn.

Program Components

  1. Project (8-16 hours a week for 7 weeks): Interns spend working in a team of student and professional women on a women’s health focused project. Interns are placed with UCSF faculty and staff or with staff at community agencies, all of whom are working on issues of women’s health.
  2. Youth Leadership Curriculum (2-3 hours/wk): Interns participate in lectures, workshops and seminars focused on understanding their health, and the various health careers open to them.
  3. Final Presentation: Interns receive instruction in making a presentation and the internship culminates with every intern giving an oral presentation on their work and experience.
  4. Reflection and Evaluation: Interns are encouraged to keep a journal of their experiences and what they learn about themselves and the area in which they are contributing

Compensation

Interns are paid $10/hour for their participation in this program.
