1.THE VACANCY

From September 2015, we are seeking a well qualified and ambitious Head of RE (with Ethics & Philosophy) to join a dynamic and highly motivated Humanities Faculty in this Leading Edge School and lead this department.

The position is to work in one of our highest performing departments, constantly involved with innovative and creative methodology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Ethics and Philosophy at Key Stages 3 and 4, including GCSE short course for all students in years 9 and 10. An ability/desire to teach AS/A2 Ethics and/or Philosophy is essential. The ability/desire to teach a small amount of Humanities (Geography and History) at KS3 would likewise be an advantage.

  1. THE FACULTY

The Humanities Faculty at Gordano includes Geography, History and Ethics at 11-16, with Politics and Philosophy/Ethics alsotaught at A-level. In Year 7, teachers may be given the opportunity to teach outside their specialist subject area within the Faculty, but from Year 8, students will be taught by subject specialists in all areas of the curriculum.

The GCSE short course in RE runs throughout Years 9 and 10, with all Year 10 students taking short and some opting for full course GCSE. Students are taught in mixed ability classes in in all years. Philosophy/Ethics is well established at A-level and is popular, with five A level classes next year. A-level students follow the OCR course in “Philosophy of Religion” and “Religious Ethics”.

3.ACCOMMODATION and RESOURCES

All classrooms have data projectors and DVD facilities. Within the Humanities Faculty there is also an ICT suite and 16 iPads which can be booked in advance.

There are a large number of textbooks within the department but these are used sparingly. Most lessons are active, engaging and highly visual. These are supported with excellent resources which aim to challenge and stretch all students. Due to the nature of the subject, these are constantly being updated.

  1. THE ROLE

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and be actively involved in continuing to develop Religious Education within the school, throughout the age and ability range. The successful candidate will be a tutor within our House based pastoral system.

6.CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

We are looking for a motivated and hard-working Headof Ethics and Philosophyto be an enthusiastic member of the Humanities Faculty. Interested candidates should display the following qualities:-

Excellent teaching skills

Creativity in bringing ideas to the department and faculty

A confident teacher ofEthics and Philosophy

Excellent organisational and management skills

Ability to develop excellent relationships with pupils and staff

Desire to work within a faculty and closely with Humanities Leadership team.

An enthusiastic teacher who is flexible and can adopt the differing teaching styles required by the courses offered

Active participation in the design and development of new courses, including contributing to the writing of lesson plans and resources for new Schemes of Learning

Guide the department through the new national curriculum changes at KS4 and 5.

Sense of humour

An ability and willingness to teach a second subject as and when required.

Commitment to using ICT as a teaching tool
