Thank you for your interest in coaching a Canadian national team. Coaching a national team is a significant commitment and Ultimate Canada would like to provide some general information for prospective coaches regarding the commitment level expected of national team coaches as well as the main responsibilities of a coach.

1.0PROGRAM INFORMATION

For the 2017 World Games, Ultimate Canada is looking at having one head coach, one assistant coach, a team manager and an in-competition trainer to support the Canadian national team. Canada has not qualified for this event at this time (June 2016). Bids will be offered based on placement in the Mixed, Open and Women’s divisions at the 2016 WUGC in June 2016.

The Word Games Head Coach position is a 1 year term, starting on August 1st, 2016, and ending after the conclusion of the 2017 event. National Team Coaching positions are volunteer-based positions. However, coaches do not need to pay for travel costs and accommodations when attending Team Canada events. A per diem for meals will also be provided.

2.0APPLICATION PROCESS

Duly filled out applications should be emailed to: by July 4th, 2016.

This application form is for Head Coach Positions only. A separate application for Assistant Coaches will be posted after announcement of the selected Head Coach.

The Head Coach Position will be appointed by the WG Coach Selection Committee comprised of 3 Competition Committee members, as well as 2 representatives of the Competitive Open and Women’s Canadian programs. Appointed Head Coach reports back to UC’s Team Manager.

3.0RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

3.1 Commitment

Below is a list of events coaches are expected to attend:

  • 2 try-outs scheduled between August and late October 2016. These try-outs will take place on weekends with at least one taking place in the East and at least one in the West
  • at least 1 training camp in 2017 with the team
  • at least 1 tournament in 2017 with the team
  • attend the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland (July 20-30, 2017 exact dates TBD)

3.2Responsibilities

The Head Coach is responsible for leading a world-class high performance plan for the World Games program, which will execute all elements related to the direction of UC’s competitive plan, ensuring continued and sustainable high performance success on the world stage. Here are some responsibilities attributed to the Head Coach.

  • Act as a role model for players and exhibit good Spirit on and off the field
  • Player application process. Review the player application process and select the team and alternates
  • Team selection plan. Create public document regarding team selection criteria and how players are selected. Must develop plan for working with people from across the country to support the player selection process
  • Language plan. Develop a language plan to address English and French communication with players.
  • Season plan. Development and implementation of a plan for training camp(s) and preparation tournament(s), and implementing the plan
  • Planning training camp. Development of a plan for training camp and implementing the plan
  • Training plans for players in areas such as fitness and skill development. Training plans must be documented and have documented monitoring. *Note: Ultimate Canada may recruit added experts to support this area
  • Competition plan. Develop a competition plan for the team
  • Debrief and documentation. Have a formal debrief with Ultimate Canada after the world championship and provide documentation on the various plans
  • Sport Canada requirements. Work with the competition committee to meet other Sport Canada national team requirements through completion of the above requirements

4.0QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate will:

  • Be 25 years of age or older
  • Show a valid criminal record check (less than 2 years old)*. Cost associated with this criminal check will be refunded.
  • Agree to the Ultimate Canada Coach’s code of conduct and the Ultimate Canada online waiver
  • Have completed the Making Head Way in sport (online), SOTG test (online), NCCP Making Ethical Decision (MED) training (4h), and MED evaluation (online)*

*These requirements can be completed after the application and selection. A proof of enrollment or receipt will be required before the appointment can be made official.

The successful candidate should:

  • Have proven experience in implementing and leading a successful high performance program, team and culture, resulting in podium success at World Championships. This may include experience coaching at a World Championships, or experience captaining and playing at a World Championships.
  • Have proven experience acting in a coaching position at the World Games or WUGC level
  • Have proven experience acting in a coaching position at the CUC level
  • Complete the NCCP Planning a Practice training, and the Ultimate-specific NCCP Competition-Introduction workshop*
  • Be able to communicate both in English and French
