Hayes Cooper Center 2014 3rd Grade Summer Reading List
Dear Parents/Guardians of Entering Third Grade Students,
Reading is important to succeed in school. Through books, your child can journey to many out of the way destinations. However, we must not forget how important it is for it is for parents to share this journey along with their children. Please make an effort to continue to read with and to your child. This year is the year that they will take the Mississippi Gateway Reading Test. It is critical that you emphasize reading in your home. This upcoming year, make sure you keep up with their AR points and make sure that they are meeting their reading goals. We found that the students that met their reading goal each nine week period were very successful on the state test.
Each student is required to read one book from each of the four topics listed on the reading list. After each book is read, an activity is completed. Look at each heading for the activity. This material is to be turned in on the first day of school in a folder.
On the following pages, you will find some suggested books and authors as well as copies of the maps. Students may choose from this list or pick an appropriate book on their own. Therefore, if you cannot find a book on this list, you may substitute a grade appropriate one from the same genre.
Sincerely,
Hayes Cooper Center’s 3rd Grade Teachers
