OWL PROWL

Hay Creek Conservation Area

Saturday February 19th, 7pm

Have you ever been in the woods at night and heard the deep hooting of a Great Horned Owl? Or the horse-like call of the Eastern Screech Owl? If not, you don’t want to miss out on this opportunity! Join usfor a walk in the woods as we play the calls of some local owl species and wait for their response. It is sure to be a hootin’ good time! Don’t forget to bring a flashlight and dress warmly.

SIMCOE WILDLIFE FESTIVAL

This weekend is all about wildlife! Drop by our booth and learn about all the events and activitieswe have planned for 2011. Our theme is “Forests” and we are excited to have hands-on activities, displays and the very popular ‘Sciensational Ssssnakes’ to keep you entertained!!

CELEBRATING EARTH DAY

Earth day is dedicated to inspiring awareness and appreciation of our earth, by participating in local activities and events. Join us for an afternoon filled with family fun activities including tree planting, guided nature hike, earth friendly crafts and so much more! This event is a joint partnership between When Nature Calls, Long Point Region Conservation Authority and Norfolk County Community Services Department.

LONG POINT – CAROLINIAN NATURE FEST

NatureFest is a celebration of our local nature and features a weekend of birding, wildlflower identification walks, salamander monitoring, frog and amphibian walks, tree identification, kids activities, displays, workshops, crafts and local foods. There is something for the whole family! Join us at Backus Heritage Conservation Area and throughout the Long Point Biosphere Reserve to experience the best of what Norfolk’s nature has to offer.

BIO-BLITZ BONANZA

Backus Woods – Sugar Bush Trail

Sunday June 5th, 10am

Celebrate the ‘International Year of Forests’ by exploring the fascinating and diverse world of a forest habitat. Equipped with field guides and a camera, your task will be to find and identify as many species of plants and animals in one of the best examples of a Carolinian forest . Selected photos will be included in the summer edition of our newsletter ‘The Snapper’. Meet at the parking lot on the 3rd Concession.

2nd ANNUAL BUTTERFLY AND DRAGONFLY FESTIVAL

Sunday July 10th, 10am -4pm

This festival is a family-friendly event, providing opportunities to learn more about these beautiful and amazing creatures! There will be numerous scheduled activities and exhibits throughout the day including cookie decorating, crafts, and guided walks around the pond search of dragonflies and in the meadow to identify butterflies. Come on out to Backus Heritage Conservation Area for all the fun!

FOREST-FEST

What better way to celebrate the ‘International Year of Forests’ than by attending Forest Fest – a festival dedicated to the education and awareness of our local forests. When Nature Calls will be there with all kinds of childrens crafts and activities, so be sure to come on by and get involved.

EARTH CACHING

Hay Creek Conservation Area

Saturday August 27th, 2pm

If you like treasure hunts and orienteering, you will not want to miss out on this high-tech scavenger hunt! Armed with a GPS unit, your task will be to find hidden earth caches using the coordinates and clues provided to you. If you manage to find them all, a surprise awaits you at the end!

STARS AND STORIES

Wagon Wheel Produce and Corn Maze

Saturday September 10th, 7pm

Join us for a night of star gazing and story telling...not only does this area have a fascinating and rich history, but also some of the best spots to set your sights on the night sky. Come out and join the North Shore Erie Amateur Astronomersto have a look through a telescope and to sit around the campfire, enjoy some hot chocolate and listen to a tales of days gone by. Don’t forget to bring a mug and lawnchair! Fee: $5/person or $15/family.

GREAT CANADIAN SHORELINE CLEANUP

Long Point Beach

Roll up your sleeves and lend a hand cleaning up the beaches of Long Point. The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a national conservation initiative that allows all Canadians to have a positive impact on their local environment. More than just a program to pick up trash, valuable data is collected from each cleanup to determine the major (and minor) causes of shoreline litter in each area. We will meet at the parking lot across from the Causeway restaurant.

ECO-KIDS NATURE DAY CAMP

SaturdayOctober 22ndSunday October 23rd, 9am – 4pm

Are you looking for some outdoor adventure? If so, then look no further! Children ages 8-12 are invited to register for a two day camp from 9am to 4pm daily at Backus Heritage Conservation Area. Participants will be engaged in environmental hands-on activities, presentations, outdoor games plus so much more! Pre-registration is required. Fee: WNC members = $40/child and non-members = $60/child.

ART IN NATURE

Hay Creek Conservation Area

Saturday November 12, 1-3pm

Let you creative side shine as you use the natural world to inspire your works of art. This program will help each participant find their inner nature spirit and express themselves in their own unique way! Time will be spent outdoors searching for the perfect items to create your own one of a kind masterpiece.
