Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order by Kevan Newman, President at 7:45 pm.

1.  Guests:

Wilfred Thiele, a resident of Hawkwood. He brought a concern to the Board about having a snow fence installed on Hawkville Close as the residents are having a difficult time trying to get out when we have an abundance of snow as we have had this year. He has called 311 and it was suggested he continue calling until he receives some response.

2.  Approval of the Agenda:

Adrian Harding moved the agenda be approved as presented. Seconded by Kurtis Bain. Motion carried.

3.  Approval of the minutes of February 25, 2014:

Under Item #9, Vice-President’s report, last paragraph, ’ Drop-In Soccer’ should read’ ‘Drop-In Sports’.

Janice Walker moved the minutes be approved as amended. Seconded by Susan Duncan.

Motion carried.

4.  Business arising from the minutes of February 25, 2014:

The on-line vote on an initial budget for the Community Engagement Project was approved with a majority of 8 out of 13 Board members.

5.  President’s Report – Kevan Newman:

Kevan attended a Ward 2 meeting, the first with our new Councillor Joe Magliocca. Constable Roy Moe, Calgary Police Services Community Liaison Officer was also there. He reported there were about 200 vandal incidences in Ward 2 which were mostly graffiti. Two 19 year old youths, residents of Hawkwood , were arrested .

By-Law Enforcement – In Ward 2, there were 120,000 complaints last year of which 6,000 were from Hawkwood. Most were concerning signs left up on public areas, waste, yards, dogs, etc.

All in all, Hawkwood is a good community!!

6.  Treasurer’s Report – Susan Duncan:

Please see the attached reports and narrative. Susan presented her report.

Adrian Harding brought forward some issues regarding soccer funds. There are still some problems regarding people trying to renew their memberships on-line. This is a SportSoft problem which they are working to resolve. The issue seems to be there are people trying to register for soccer but are not being prompted for community membership and cannot register. Janice Walker will be working with Linda from SportSoft to keep on top of things. This problem affects our revenue from soccer so hopefully, things will be resolved soon.

Kurtis Bain motioned the Treasurer’s Report be approved as presented. Seconded by Donna Chapman. Motion carried.

7.  City of Calgary – Heather MacKay:

No report from Heather for this meeting.

8.  Operation Playground – Heather Kovach:

Under the Fundraising item, the next fundraiser is a community bottle drive on May6/7/8th. Residents can drop off bottles at either Hawkwood or St. Maria Goretti schools and some Grade 6 students may go door to door. Also, under Item #5, for more info go to ‘hawkwoodca.com/play’ not as stated in the report.

HCA – Operation Playground Report for February.

Fundraising

·  We had a very successful night Saturday raising a total of $10,134.50.

·  We also received a $1,000 donation from Precision Drilling.

·  The $11,134.50 will be split evenly between the 2 schools.

·  The winner of WestJet tickets was Tracy Firth – if you did not win, you can blame Wanita as she drew the ticket ;-).

·  Our next Group Fundraiser is a community bottle drive May 6th 7th and 8th.

5 things we want you to know about Operation Playground

We are now into the final 6 months of this project and going forward all our communication will be focussed on getting the word out on 5 Key Messages.

Those messages are:

a.  We are building our playgrounds August 6,7, 8 and 9 and August 13,14, 15 and 16.

b.  We need community volunteers all 8 days to help us build (everything from construction help to babysitting and food services).

c.  We need equipment and materials donated for our build (excavators, backhoe, etc.)

d.  We are still in need of financial support either through donation or sponsorship

  1. For more info go to hawkwood.ca/play, email us at or visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OperationPlaygroundforHawkwoodCommunity.

9.  Round Table – 2 minute report:

Membership – Janice Walker:

March is the City of Calgary Community Membership Awareness month. Janice will be involved with this.

Janice would also like to make some changes to the membership form in the HawkEye. She would like to have registration on-line only and eliminate the form altogether. However, this may cause us to lose some potential memberships so it was decided to keep the form as is particularly as it only appears to involve about 10 memberships per year. It will state two ways to register – either on-line or send in the form.

Social – Kurtis Bain:

The Winterfest was cancelled due to the very cold weather. Coming up in May, we will be having the Parade of Garage Sales on May 10 . We will also be having a Clean-Up Day at which we will provide hot dogs/pop, etc.

It seems we should be doing better at advertising our events and will be advertising at the schools in their newsletters. The deadline for their newsletter is the 25th of the month and we can contact Heather Kovach or Carla Leakos.

Vice-President – Adrian Harding:

The Community Engagement Project will be advertised in the schools and the churches in our community to hopefully get more involvement.

Adrian has revamped the website a little. He encouraged us to check out the website (if we haven’t already) to see the changes.

10.  New Business:

No new business to report.

Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 pm.

The next regular meeting of the HCA will be held March 18, 2014, 7:30 pm at the Uplands Recreation Centre.
