Help put an end to the negativity of Fat Talk, online and in real life, say NO to Fat Talk during February.
93% of women engage in some form of social media self-shaming and body bullying Fat Talk (Salk & Engeln-Maddox, 2011). ‘F’ words can be damaging to yourself, to your friends and to your family.
Fat talk uses weight as a reference point for feelings; that is, saying “I’m fat” can be like saying “I feel depressed” or “I feel out of control.” As such, this type of talk solicits reassurance and encouragement and promotes group affiliation, but it also emphasizes the shared distaste of fat and the value of thinness!
The potentially dangerous impact of fat talk should not be underestimated. It perpetuates the overvalued ideal of thinness and shared revulsion of fat and may be particularly damaging to those who are vulnerable to eating problems. (Gapinski et al., 2003).
Butterfly encourages you to spread the message of goingFat Talk Freeduring February, encouraging everyone to change the way they talk about their bodies and recognise Fat Talk in daily conversations, encouraging friends and family to shut down Fat Talk too.Download Posters
This can be done through self-expression, the use of social media and even through the creation of awareness and fundraising events. Down load our event planner.
Plate up the Positives during April & May
Unfortunately our culture accepts dieting as a norm. The essence of most marketing in western societies (and becoming more universal) is ‘thin equals success’. This coupled with the ‘war on obesity’ leaves the majority of people vulnerable to exploitation and confused with eroded body image, resulting in many turning to unhealthy behaviours, including dieting, in futile attempts to achieve a number on the scales and a ‘perfect’ body.
Join Butterfly throughgout April and May to help celebrate International No Diet Day (6th May 2014) and'Plate Up The Positives'. Enjoy a moring tea at your school, in your workplace or in your community or celebrate with your friends, family or colleagues over a delicious, healthy and nutritious meal. ‘Plate up the positives’ is a great opportunity to focus on healthy behaviours around food and raise funds for Butterfly at the same time.

Mums of Mandurah - positive role models.
Butterfly would like to thank all the Mums of Mandurah for their support and commitment. The Mums of Mandurah recently held an awareness raising lunch at Catch 22 Resaurant in Dolphin Quay, Mandurah. The lunch provided an opportunity to learn more about how as parents and carers we can be positive role models for our children, so that they in turn can develop positive relationships with their bodies.

Challenging the thin ideal …
What girls and now many guys do to try and change the way they look can involve some pretty risky behaviours.
Butterfly continues to raise awareness of the dangers of dieting; the thin ideal and what many girls and more and more guys are doing to try and change the way they look can involve pretty risky behaviours. Lack of self confidence and poor body image, subliminal messages from adults - parents and family, and seeing hundreds of images everyday telling them how they should look results in more pronounced increases in body dissatisfaction. (Heinberg & Thompson, 1995). This can contribute to young people feeling pretty crappy about themselves.
"Young people need to know that they have so much more to give the world than how they look!" Christine Morgan.
Take a look at Butterfly CEO Christine Morgan talking with Studio -10 about the 'thinspiration' craze - the consequences are worrying!
