Have your say on the future of theBulimba District

July 2011

Planning for the future

Since May 2009, Brisbane City Council has been working with the local community to plan for the future of the Bulimba District. Together we have created a draft Neighbourhood Plan for managing growth through sustainable and responsible development. This is your final chance to comment on the draft Neighbourhood Plan and, if you want to, suggest changes.

This newsletter gives details on how you can view the draft plan and how to make a formal, written submission. Submissions must be received by 5pm, Tuesday 6 September 2011.

More than 100 residents, businesses and landowners commented on the draft neighbourhood plan strategy which was publicly circulated in August 2010. Council considered all comments when preparing the draft neighbourhood plan.

Council endorsed a draft Bulimba District Neighbourhood Plan on 30 November 2010 and it was then sent to the State Government for the first State interest review. The Minister for Local Government has now approved the plan for public notification.

You are invited to a ‘get to know your draft Neighbourhood Plan’ session.

Key highlights of the draft Neighbourhood Plan

Although growth in the Bulimba District is expected to be lower than in other parts of Brisbane, there are some potential development sites in the area that, with careful planning and design, will add to its vibrancy. Highlights of the draft plan include:

  • demolition control provisions to ensure individual pre-1946 properties in the plan area are protected, even when amongst more modern development
  • Oxford Street’s commercial and retail activity will be extended towards the Bulimba ferry terminal
  • a proposed riverside park to promote greater public access to the Brisbane River
  • parts of the Bulimba north precinct will be rezoned from light industry to low-medium residential, allowing residential buildings of up to three storeys
  • consolidate development at the Hawthorne Rd/Lindsay St intersection to create a new convenience centre.
