Baby Burial Gown … Knit Version

(by Beth Koskie, © 2001) Permission granted to post

On Bev's Country Cottage

Wouldn’t make sleeves that big for burial gown.

Fits large preemie (for newborn size, use worsted weight yarn)

Materials needed:

2 50-gram skeins Paton’s Look at Me yarn or other baby sport

Size 8 & 10.5 needles

4 stitch holders

4 place markers

Yarn needle

Size G crochet hook

4.5 yards ½” gross grain ribbon

Fray check

Sewing thread/needle

One “rose” button at least 5/8” size

Two small rounded buttons for cuffs

YOKE:

Starting at neck, cast on 54 stitches with size 8 needles.

Row 1: Knit 8 sts, inc 1, PM (place marker), inc 1, knit 9, inc 1, PM, inc 1, knit 12, inc 1, PM, inc 1, knit 9, inc 1, PM, inc 1, knit 8. (62 sts)

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10: Purl across, moving markers.

Rows 3, 5, 7, 9: *Knit to 1 stitch before marker, inc 1 before and after marker (moving marker between stitches), repeat from * across. (94 sts by the end of row 9)

Row 11: Knit across to 1 stitch before marker, inc 1 before and after marker, knit to 1 stitch before second marker, inc 1. Place the front 24 stitches on a stitch holder, 21 sts for second sleeve on 2nd holder, 14 sts for back 2 on 3rd holder. Now purl back across first sleeve stitches still on needle, and place 15 sts for first back on 4th holder.

SLEEVE:

Using 21 stitches on needle, switch to size 10.5 needles and *knit 1, inc 1, repeat from * across, end knit 1 (34 sts).

Purl across 1 row.

Work in stockinette stitch on size 10.5 needles for 10 rows.

*Knit 1, Knit 2 together, repeat from * across, end knit 1.

Knit 2, *knit into the thread between the stitches, knit 1, repeat from * across (34 sts).
Knit 1 row.

Purl 2 together across (17 sts).

Knit garter stitch for 6 rows. Bind off loosely.

SECOND SLEEVE:

Skip front stitches and put sts for second sleeve back on size 8 needle, and knit across, increasing 1 st at beginning and end of row. Purl one row even.

Switch to size 10.5 needles and *knit 1, inc 1, repeat from * across, end knit 1 (34 sts).
Finish as for second sleeve.

JOIN BODICE:

Place stitches for first back on 1 needle (size 8), place stitches for front and 2nd back on second needle.

Using size 8 needles, attach new strand of yarn at edge of 1st back, under the stitch closest to the other needle. PM, inc 1 in first front stitch, knit across front stitches, inc 1 in last front stitch, PM, inc 1 in first stitch of 2nd back, knit across. (52 stitches).

Purl 1 row.

Knit to 1 st before 1st marker, inc 1 st before and after marker, knit to 1 stitch before 2nd marker, inc before and after marker, knit across (56 sts).

Purl 1 row.

Repeat last two rows once (60 sts).

Knit in stockinette stitch for 4 rows, removing markers at beginning of this.

Lacing row: Knit 1, *knit 2 together, yarn over, repeat from * across, end knit 1.

Purl one row.

SKIRT:

Switch to size 10.5 needles, *knit 4, inc 1, repeat from * across (72 sts).

Knit in garter stitch for 15” (for me this was 40 ridges); bind off loosely. If making a newborn size, make the skirt longer … at least 16-17”.

NECKLINE:

With G crochet hook and front of gown facing you, attach yarn at right back corner. Sc in 1st 6 cast on stitches, decrease over next 2 sts twice, sc in next 7 sts, decrease over next 2 sts twice, sc in next 11 sts, decrease over next 2 sts twice, sc in next 7 sts, decrease over next 2 sts twice, sc in last 7 sts, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Decrease over 1st 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, decrease over next 2 sts, sc in 5 sts, decrease over 2 sts, sc in 8 sts, decrease over next 2 sts, sc in 5 sts, decrease over next 2 sts, sc in last 5 sts. End off and weave in ends.

YOKE EDGING:

With G hook, attach yarn with a slip stitch at beginning of garter stitch waist along back edge. Sc in each knit row up one back, sc twice in top corner, sc in each sc across neck, work 2 sc in second corner, sc in each knit row down other back, slip stitch into beginning of garter stitch skirt/waist. End off, weave in ends.

FINISHING TOUCHES:

1. Attach a “rose” button to front neckline for decoration with sewing thread.

2. Cut a length of ribbon to go through lacing row of waist, from back to back, tying in the back with a enough length for a bow. Weave it through lacing row and “secure” ends of ribbon with fray check. Cut another length of ribbon to make a bow in front and sew it with sewing thread to center of front, securing it to lacking ribbon; again, “secure” ends with fray check.

3. Cut 6-8 lengths of ribbon long enough to be one side of a tie (6-8”). “Secure” each end of all ribbons with fray check, then turn one end under and attach it with sewing thread to OUTSIDE of back of gown, down the back to tie gown shut.

4. Sew sleeve seams shut to garter stitch cuffs, leaving those open. Sew two small white buttons to one side of each cuff and “button” through loose stitches on other side.
