6th Grade Orchestra

Year: 2014-2015

Course Requirements:

Each student will be required to:

  • Perform in orchestra rehearsals on an alternating day schedule.
  • Be prepared for these rehearsals with the following materials:
  • violin/viola- instrument, music binder, pencil, shoulder rest
  • cello/bass- music binder, pencil, rock-stop
  • attend weekly rotating lessons
  • prepare for these weekly lessons with at- home practice (at least 120 minutes per week)
  • Attend both concerts (winter & spring) at HauppaugeHigh School.
  • Complete any other assignments that may be deemed important by the string faculty.
  • You will bring your instrument home at the end of the day and bring it to school for your lesson and rehearsals.

Instruments:

  • HauppaugeMiddle School will provide cellos and basses to be used for in-school rehearsals (cello and bass players will be expected to rent/purchase a cello/bass to be used for at-home practice.)
  • Violin and viola players are expected to rent/purchase an instrument for use in both rehearsals and at home practice.

Lockers:

  • Lockers are made available for use by all violin and viola players. There are 2 students to a locker.
  • Lock will be provided by the school (instruments are not to be left in an unlocked locker)

Grading Policy:

Students’ quarterly grade will be based on the following:

  1. Attendance at lessons, sectionals and rehearsals – 20% of grade
  2. Proper use of rehearsal time, preparedness, attentiveness, punctuality, appropriate behavior and overall attitude – 30% of grade.
  3. Rehearsal Behavior Group Grade - 20% of grade
  4. Periodic exams (performance/written) – 20% of grade.
  5. Concerts (required performance) – 10% of grade
  6. Two quarterly failures will result in possible dismissal from the program.

Practice Sheets:

  • These sheets will be handed out during the first lesson of each quarter
  • Students will be expected to practice at least 120 minutes each week.
  • Parents are asked to provide a signature on these sheets in order to validate each week’s practice.

NYSSMA:

  • All students are provided with the opportunity to perform at the NYSSMA solo festival in the spring. (NYSSMA is not required, but it is strongly encouraged.)

Material needed for lessons/rehearsals: Please have the following materials by the next rehearsal:

  • 3 Ring Binder
  • Page protectors
  • Instrument, shoulder rest (violin, violas) , rock stop (cellos, bass)
  • Pencil
