Purported Paranormal Claims:

Dining Room: Candles in candelabra moved from upright position to slanted position.

Foyer/stairs: Woman descending stairs and regressing in age. Also apparition of their slave, “Hattie,” carrying a tray up the stairs witnessed.

Parlor: Shadows and voices heard.

Children’s Room: Sounds of children playing, laughing. There was a picture taken from the outside showing a child in period clothing looking out from a window of this room.

Master Bedroom: One paranormal group got an EVP of a gruff male voice stating “Get out.”

Back room of L Wing Upper Level: Those in the office below this room hear what sounds like furniture being moved around. There is not furniture in this room.

Misc: Several have smelled the scent of cherry pipe tobacco throughout various parts of the house.

Debunked claims:

Candles/candelabra:

Humidity and temperature changes will cause an upright candle to eventually shift position away from vertical. HPI is certain that this is what is taking place and doesn’t feel this is paranormal.

Cherry pipe tobacco scent:

A more complete knowledge of when this has taken place is required. If someone that is a pipe smoker has recently smoked cherry pipe tobacco, and walked through the area it would definitely leave a room note. However, we do know that this has taken place under conditions when nobody had smoked a pipe.

Voices:

HPI noted that sounds from outside carry very well into the house, and we could hear conversations taking place with people outside.

Child in the window photo:

HPI examined the image of what looks like a small child peering out the upstairs window. There is a light source noted in the room where the child is looking out from the window, and we believe that it is causing shadows and matrixing is the cause of seeing the child.

Personal Experiences:

HPI members experienced being touched, to having their pants tugged on. While Team 1 was investigating, Team 2 heard the moans of a woman coming from the adjacent room to the gift shop (this is the room between the gift shop and the dining room).

Team 1 did experience the reported claim of seeing a woman peering over the upstairs banister looking down the stairs, but was not able to capture this on video.

Team 1 also had several team members touched, along with one member having his pant leg tugged upon.

All Teams experienced the sensation of being watched, but it was not a malevolent spirit. At no time did any of the Investigating Teams felt threatened or unwelcomed.

Additional Notes: None

Summary:

HPI did a complete and comprehensive investigation of the Harris-Kearney House. We did not experience the claim of the ladies ascending/descending the stairs. Nor did we experience the smell of cherry pipe tobacco, or the candles slanting in the candelabra.

The Teams did experience audible moans, and strong KII reactions in the middle room upstairs in the L wing. The EVP’s captured in the backroom upstairs in the L wing indicates an intelligent haunt, as does the humming along with the period music recorded downstairs in the parlor, support by audio and video files.

Team 1 experienced the sound of furniture moving upstairs, and that activity is documented on an audio file. As there is not furniture in the room where the movement was heard from, the thought is that this is residual in nature.

Conclusion:

Based on the evidence collected, and the nature of this evidence, it is HPI’s opinion that the Harris-Kearney House contains an intelligent haunting resulting from several entities, along with a residual haunt evidenced by the sounds of furniture moving in a room where there is no furniture.
