Issue No. 3

Friday 23rdJanuary 2015

FULL STEAM AHEAD!
We continue to make an excellent start to the year and it’s great to see the children so energised in their learning. Over the next fortnight I will be visiting each class and asking the children about various aspects of their learning. In the week of 9thFebruary, children will be assessed in reading, writing and maths. These results will be ready to share with you in our Parents Evenings during March.  #hafrenfamily
INDOOR ATHLETICS
Yesterday, 18 of our young athletes took part in the Newtown Area Indoor Athletics Competition at Maldwyn Leisure Centre.
They took part in a wide range of activities both running and field events. I was really impressed with the pace they showed and I think the Leisure Centre staff are still looking for some of the foam javelins that reached certain sections of the roof!!
Well done everyone who took part, especially the fliers in the girls relay team and also to Mr Copus for organising the athletes so well. 

Cooking Award
I am delighted to be able to publicly congratulate our Head Cook, Val Barkley, in being successful (1st place) in a recent baking event held at Llandrindod Wells.
Val will now move on to represent Powys at a National ‘Bake-Off’ to be held at the Vale Hotel, Cardiff.
As you may be aware, this is where the Welsh team is based for the next few months and I’m sure they’d jump at the chance to sample a cup-cake or three!
Congratulations Val, we are very fortunate to have you leading our canteen team as you offer a fantastic dinner for our children (and staff!) 
BINGO – FULL HOUSE!!
Many thanks to all those parents and families who supported our BINGO event at the Queen’s Head on Wednesday night, it really is very much appreciated.
We’re delighted that the BINGO raised over £300, with the raffle collection of £125 and 50 square where the prize was a fantastic cake cooked by our very own Pastry Chef, Mrs Barkley. 
We have got so many plans and so much we’d like to do but can’t do it alone.
The contributions you make and the support you give us will only help us achieve these things quicker. Thank-you. ;)
“SLIP ‘n SLIDE!”
I’m aware of some of the concerns that have been raised regarding the entrances to school and the poor standards of the paths (surfacing and drainage). Please bear with us as we try to resolve this problem. In the meantime, please take extra care when entering the school as these issues, together with the cold conditions, make the paths dangerous and tricky indeed! Myself and Mr Gregory will try to cover as many areas as possible with our grit but can’t cover everything!
Dosbarth Bedw (Miss Allen / Mrs Bridges): gan Cole a Libby
With Miss Allen we have been sorting animals. We looked in a round house. With Mrs Bridges we have been learning a story, singing a song and drawing a picture about Boudicca. We have been doing ‘difference’ in maths. We are looking forward to doing some metal detecting with Miss Allen next week.
Dosbarth Ceirios (Miss Rees / Mrs Grosvenor):
What a busy week! There has been lots going on and we have been working hard through the work that Miss Rees left us. Both Mr Buckley and Mrs Evans have said how well we’ve done and have been really impressed with the amount of work we have completed. 
We have continued to do lots of work on the Celts and have been studying Boudicca. Did you know she went to school with Mr Davies – Mr Hyde said so! ;-)
Dosbarth Celyn (Mrs Case): (gan Jessica a Rueben)
This week in literacy we have been reading different versions of the welsh legend, which is called the lady of the lake. Also we started drawing story maps for our own version of the tale.
In numeracy we have been rounding to estimate our answers using grid method to multiply and use a numberline (and chunking) to divide. Additionally, we have been using inverse operations to check our answers.
In geography we have been looking at ideal locations for a settlement site. We have looked at different geographical features and created our own ideal site.In art we have been sketching Celtic figures using a grid to help us get positioning and proportion correct.
In Cymraeg we have been learning vocabulary for all our different hobbies.
Dosbarth Derwen (Mrs Lewis): (gan Jess and Tarran)
This week we have been looking at websites on our laptops and ipads to find information about the body parts and their jobs.
We have also been looking at different leisure activities over the last 70 years.
With Mr Davies we have been doing work about extinct animals and we have been designing picture frames with wood. Next week some people will start making them.
Dosbarth Helyg (Mr Macdonald): (gan written by Erin a Ruby)
This week in Dosbarth Helyg, we did proportions in maths. E.g: If 6 people came round for dinner and we used 12 eggs, how many eggs would there be if 15 people came for dinner?
People / Eggs
6 x2= / 12
15 x2= / 30

We also finished our play scripts and after that we swapped our play scripts with another group and did drama work with them.
As you may know, our topic is People of the Past, so we chose a famous person from the last millennium each and are going to do a PowerPoint on them, which are due next week.
(Written by Erin and Ruby)
Dosbarth Onnen (Mrs Bowen): (gan Stephanie, Sydney a Darcy)
This week Onnen have been writing the ‘Photo Album’ by Pie Corbett. This week in maths we have been doing division, number lines and multiplying.
In our topic we have been in groups doing different activities they are famous people power point, timeline, the heart and the human body. This week has gone great.
