Undergraduate Expansion Timeline of Progress

2004

  • Herb and Bar Hanson pledged $10 million toward the construction of a new undergraduate facility.

2005

  • University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks presented a $206.1 million, six-year proposal for the 2006 Capital Bonding Request to the Board of Regents. The board approved the proposal, which includes funding for an expansion of the Carlson School of Management, in addition to a new science teaching student services building, and a new medical biosciences building.

Winter, 2006

  • The building design for Hanson Hall was finalized by RSP Architects.

February 21, 2006

  • Members from the Minnesota House committees for Higher Education and Finance and Capital Investment visited the Carlson School to see the expansion requests first-hand.

March 6, 2006

  • Carlson School students, staff, and faculty visited the Minnesota State Capitol for “Day at the Capitol” to rally support for the Undergraduate program expansion from lawmakers. Jim Campbell, Michael Houston, and Surmodics CEO Dale Olseth, ’52 BSB, shared their support of the expansion, and the rally concluded with a song: Members of the University of Minnesota marching band led the group in the University song, the “Minnesota Rouser.”

March 30, 2006

  • University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks announced the Carlson School of Management’s undergraduate building will be named Herbert M. Hanson, Jr. Hall, in honor of alumnus Herb Hanson, and his wife Bar.

May 22, 2006

  • The Minnesota legislature approved to allocate $26.6 million to Hanson Hall.

June 1, 2006

  • Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed the state’s bonding bill at the Carlson School to highlight the bill’s college and university building spending.

August 25, 2006

  • Herb Hanson received the University of Minnesota Outstanding Achievement Award.

Fall 2006

  • The Carlson School admitted 125 additional freshmen, making the total admitted 500 and putting the Carlson School at par with other Big Ten schools’ undergraduate admissions.

September 28, 2006

  • The Carlson School broke ground on Herbert M. Hanson, Jr. Hall.
  • Students created and released a virtual tour of the future Hanson Hall on DVD.

February 7, 2007

  • Target made a gift of $5 million to the University of Minnesota. The gift was designated for the Carlson School’s Hanson Hall, the Weisman Art Museum, and TCF Bank Stadium.

September 2007

  • The Class of 2011 began their studies at the Carlson School. For the first time, students participated in an innovative laptop program that creates a mobile, collaborative learning environment.
  • The Carlson School announced a new international experience requirement for the incoming freshman class of 2008.
  • Three Carlson School undergraduate students successfully lobbied faculty for a public/nonprofit management major. The major program was approved in April and became available to students in fall 2007.
  • Dean Alison Davis-Blake announced significant changes in the Undergraduate program curriculum, including a new contemporary management course, and an immersion core.

September 2008

  • A grand opening ceremony and open house for Herbert M. Hanson, Jr. Hall will be held on September 25.
  • The Carlson School will welcome 450 incoming freshman undergraduate students, up from 300 in 2004.
