Hampton Roads – Town Hall Subcommittee Meeting

March 15, 2010

In Attendance: Shewling Moy Wong, Ray Obispo, Angela Chiang, Dilip Sarkar

Absent:Felix Wang

Updates

·  Facility - Ray did a presentation to the Filipino Advisory Board several weeks ago. The presentation was well received. Ray had initially/tentatively proposed May 9 to coincide with Asian Heritage Month.

·  Shewling pointed out that May 9 is Mother's Day and is likely not a good day to hold a Town Hall

·  We also want to hold the Town Hall on a weekend date

·  Proposed that we ask Ray to check out the dates for:

o  April 24

o  April 25

o  May 1

o  May 2

·  Lessons learned from Richmond TownHall:

o  Content and speakers from previous TownHalls were good, however attendance was very poor

o  Not enough advertising to draw interest to our Town Hall

o  Many people attended the reception but did not come to the Town Hall event

o  Be clear to have speakers are speaking to relevant topics - ask speakers to submit an outline of what they are going to talk to, in advance

·  Suggested that we invite the Governor to the Hampton Roads Town Hall

·  Perhaps Census should be tee'd up as a topic?

·  Logistics:

o  Length of Town Hall - Recommend between 2 to 2.5 hours total

o  Potential Speakers/Topics:

§  Business/Small Business, Minority Business (Economic Development of VA Beach area)

§  Education - Ray will explore, narrow to ESL, perhaps at High School levels

§  2010 Census -

§  Open Forum

o  Suggest that we build a one-pager re: VAAB members, history etc...to share at the Town Hall (Vicki will own this)

o  Division of Action Items and Follow Up:

§  Business/Small Business - Shewling Moy Wong

§  Education - Ray Obispo

§  2010 Census- Vicki Mirandah

o  Timeframe - mid to late afternoon

·  Next Meeting on March 29:

o  Discuss publicity/media

o  Tighten agenda and discuss next steps

Please let me know if you have any questions

Best,

Vicki Mirandah – Chair, VAAB
