Comment:

This provision will provide full day care in Lee-on-the-Solent where there is currently no full day care provision covering children from 0-5 years. This provision will meet the childcare needs of parents. The target opening date of January 2010 has slipped to March 2010 due to initial difficulties with the planning department of Gosport Borough Council.

At the moment there is no overall change in the number of places provider. However, the new proposed provision will offer an additional 85 places.

Comment:

There have been 4 claims for ChIF funding in the Gosport area during this quarter. A number of requests for Aiming High funding have been received and the Area Inco service will ensure that support is offered to these settings to develop their inclusive practice. This is usually done by working with the school SENCOs, Childcare Development Workers and Childminding Network Co-ordinators.

Comment

One out of the five newly accredited network childminders has started a foundation degree this quarter while one has achieved EYPS Status. Six network childminders in Gosport are providing early years education accessing the nursery education grant (EYE providers). 3 network childminders on the 2 year pilot are providing childcare services for eligible families. There are currently 8 childminders going through initial assessment to join the network.

Development of Extended Schools Activities and Out of School/Holiday Provision

The Child Development Worker post in Gosport has very recently been filled. Prior to this the Local Development Team and the Senior Development Officer (Playwork) continued to offer support to out of school providers in Gosport.

The Gosport Extended Services have been running a project called FLASH ( Fun Learning & Achievement out of school hours. The activities are varied and include Grease & Talent Show, Rock Challenge, Cooking, Geography club, Bike fix club, Art club, Music workshop, Young engineers, Modelling and a Film club. The activities are free and aimed at improving the achievement of 12-16 year old children and also raise aspiration.

The Extended Services and Bridgemary College are jointly supporting a project offering family learning opportunities for children aged 8 -12 years. Activities offered include cooking and healthy lifestyle, carnival crafts, computing and financial management for adults only. The activities are free and aimed at improving the lives of both children and their families.

Parental Demand

The Children’s Information Service (CIS) received one enquiry from the Gosport area relating to childcare places. The parent was supported by the Outreach Worker (Parent Information) to find a place.

There were no start up or sustainability grants were issued during this quarter.

Other

The 2 year old pilot scheme is making good progress. There have been 138 eligible requests from the Gosport area out of which 3 parents have taken up places with approved network childminders and the rest with approved sessional and full day care providers.

Conclusion

Unemployment levels in the Gosport Borough Council area averages at 3.2% for this quarter. Childcare provision in Gosport appears to be meeting the needs of parents. The development of network childminder provision continues to grow with one network childminder achieving the Early Years Professional Status.

Gosport Extended Services are providing activities to support both parents and their children and the role of the Childcare Development Worker now been undertaken will ensure that out of school providers in Gosport are fully supported.
