HAGEN ANDERSEN

Class of 1963

BASKETBALL

BASEBALL

As a shortstop, Hagan Andersen received three varsity letters in baseball. Between his junior and senior seasons, Hagan stole 32 of 33 bases, and was named All NBIL in 1962 and All County in 1963, along with teammates catcher Robert Dickman and pitcher Robert Kenny. Most impressively, Hagan’s 1963 team played in the Bergen County semifinals, won the State Group II championship, and is still remembered as one of the best baseball teams in school history.

A three-time letterman in basketball as well, Hagan Andersen averaged over 19 points per game as a senior, earning All NBIL and 2nd Team All County honors. Doing double duty in 1963, Hagan won the gold medal in the broad jump and helped the Norsemen track team, coached by the legendary Jack Yockers, win the league meet.

Hagan played basketball and baseball at the University of Massachusetts, and was an All New England third baseman on a team that won the Yankee Conference. After his sophomore year, Hagan was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and played six years of minor league baseball, reaching Triple-A and making the 1970 Southern League All-Star Team as a second baseman with the Double-A Montgomery Rebels.

Hagan remembers fondly his basketball coach Fred Hildebrandt and his freshman and sophomore baseball coach Ralph Cobb. Hagan also retains strong memories of his varsity baseball coach Joe Tully – “what an inspirational coach.”

In 1970, Hagan married Lucille (they met at UMass) and they have been together for 40 years. After years in real estate, the Andersens retired and currently split their time at their ski house in Vermont and in Naples, Florida playing golf (where he is his club’s current champion).
